David L. Elwood, Jr., age 89, of Calvert, MD passed away on October 9, 2012 in the company of his family. He was born on April 8, 1923 in Wilmington, DE and a resident of the “Forty-acre” neighborhood. He served in World War II as a paratrooper in the Pacific Theater of Operations with the 503rd Parachute Infantry Regiment an independent Regimental Combat Team, which earned a Presidential Unit Citation and was one of the most decorated units of its kind. He was employed as a Millwright with the Joseph Bancroft and Son Company and also as a Machinist/Millwright with the DuPont Company (Experimental Station), retiring in 1980. He was a member of many organizations including: the American Legion Post #30, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Moose Lodge of Claymont, DE, the Elks Lodge of Selbyville, DE; the Knights of Columbus and the DuPont Country Club. He was an 83 year parishioner of St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Wilmington, DE and a recent parishioner of St. Agnes Catholic Church in Rising Sun, MD. He enjoyed dancing, golf, bowling and traveling.
He was predeceased by his parents David LeRoy Elwood, Sr. and Marguerite Toner; brothers James and Joseph Elwood; sister Jean Austin and husband Bernard; and brother-in-law George Evans. He is survived by his wife of 67 years Rita Ann (Kelly); son Paul D. Elwood and wife Linda of Calvert, MD; sisters Louise Evans of Long Island, NY and Mary Ann Permar and husband Joseph of Wilmington, DE; sister-in-law Patricia Elwood of Claymont, DE; grandchildren David A. Elwood and wife Victoria of Lewes, DE and Erin Calhoun and husband Todd of Calvert, MD; great grandchildren Macey Jones, Caleb Campbell, Madison Elwood and Mason Calhoun.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Agnes Church in Rising Sun, MD on Wednesday, October 17th, 2012 at 11:00 am. Friends and family may call one hour before at the church. He will be laid to rest in the Delaware Veterans Cemetery in Glasgow, DE. Memorial donations may be made to Little Sisters of the Poor, Jeanne Jugan Center c/o R.T.
