Clifton Kenneth Stoops, Sr., age 91, of Elkton, MD, passed away on Wednesday, December 3, 2025. He was born on July 6, 1934, in Newark DE, to the late Clara (Everett) and George Stoops.
At the age of five, Clifton moved with his family to Elkton, Maryland, where he embraced country life alongside his two older sisters. He graduated from Elkton High School in 1952, and in January of 1953, he married the love of his life, Theresa M. Hart—his devoted wife of 69 years. In 1956, he proudly built the family home where they would raise their six children. Clifton began his career as a lab technician with the DuPont Company, Stine-Haskell, and retired in 1993 after more than 30 years of dedicated service.
Known for his quick wit and playful sense of humor, Clifton was always the family jokester—a gift he passed on to several of his children and grandchildren. Music was one of his greatest joys; he loved to play guitar and sing, and most weekends friends and family would gather at the house, each joining in with an instrument of their choice. He also enjoyed softball and bowling and played in the Stine-Haskell league. A proud member of the IOOF, Centreville Lodge #37, he valued the camaraderie and friendships he found there.
Clifton loved spending time outdoors—whether fishing, hunting, golfing, or playing horseshoes with friends. He could often be found at Delaware Park watching the ponies and was an enthusiastic supporter of the Philadelphia Eagles and Phillies. A self-proclaimed meteorologist, he was frequently called upon for his weather forecasts. He especially cherished the annual family trips to the Outer Banks and took great delight in watching his grandchildren play sports.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Jose Ma and Amy McMillan for their continued care, and to the staff at Amedisys for their compassion and support. A special thank-you goes to David and Jen—your visits always meant so much to him.
Clifton is survived by his six children: Diana L. Delp (Barry Barker), Deborah L. Stoops (Charles Birney), Clifton K. Stoops, Jr. (Shirl), Tina M. Gifford (Donald), Wendy A. McDaniel (Mick), and Michelle D. Graybeal (John); eleven grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Clifton is preceded in death by his loving wife, Theresa M. Stoops, grandson, Clifton K. Stoops III, and two sisters: Lousie Conway and Alice Karppinen.
As per Clifton’s request, all services will be private.
