














Charles “George” Shirley, age 82, of Earleville, MD, passed away on Tuesday, January 6, 2015 at Bay Health Medical Center in Milford, DE. He was born February 6, 1932 in Philadelphia, PA to the late Walter J. and Gertrude (Bainbridge) Shirley.
George, as he was known to his family and friends, proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. Mechanically inclined, he put his talent to use as a HVAC mechanic and worked for many contractors over the years. He even served as an RV mechanic in his retirement for his neighbors at Indian Acres Camp Ground. George was a volunteer fire fighter in whichever community his family lived. A supporter of the Boy Scouts, George worked as a Camp Ranger in Pennsylvania and New York where he was known as the “Stone Faced Ranger”. A model train enthusiast, George had an extensive platform layout in his house. He would also spend many hours boating on the waters of the Chesapeake.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Nancy; a daughter Nancy J. Gilbert and husband Robert of Lincoln, DE; sons Charles R. Shirley and wife Suzanne of North East, MD, and Richard Shirley and wife Marianne of Telford, PA;; 7 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren; and 4 sisters, Claire Wooler, Betsy Sabato, and Carol Shirley, all of Philadelphia, PA and Doris Smith of Ambler, PA; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his brothers Jimmy and Walter, and his sisters Gertrude and Mary.
A service will be held at 3PM on Saturday, January 10, 2015 at R.T. Foard Funeral Home, PA, 259 E. Main St., Elkton, MD 21921. Family and friends may visit one hour prior beginning at 2PM at the funeral home. Burial will be held privately.
