Charles “Sonny” Lester Travers Jr. passed away on May 14, 2022, in Rising Sun, MD.
Born in Washington, D.C., he was the son of the late Charles Lester Travers Sr. and Mildred Amorette (Marks) Travers. He graduated from Surrattsville High School in Clinton, MD, in 1961. He retired from the Department of Sanitation of the DC government.
Sonny will be remembered for his great sense of humor and his ability to make people laugh. In addition to cracking jokes, Sonny enjoyed relaxing at the beach, going to car shows, buying and selling cars (especially Cadillacs!), playing cards with friends, listening to Elvis and Johnny Cash, and drinking screwdrivers. His friends and family loved to be around him.
He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Nancy Travers; his three children, Toni Hegarty, Charles “Chuck” Travers, and Charlene Behnke; daughter-in-law, Teri Travers; sons-in-law, Kevin Hegarty and Mark Behnke; eight grandchildren, Kieran Hegarty (wife, Spenser Keane), Red Hegarty, Cailey Hegarty, Kate Travers, Allie Travers, Emily Behnke, Nicholas Behnke, and Michael Behnke; one great-grandson, Declan Hegarty; siblings, Darleen MacIntosh and Gary Travers; and many friends whom he loved like family. He is predeceased by his sister Linda Cease. In his final years, residing at Calvert Manor Rehabilitation Center, Sonny was cared for by very special staff.
A brief memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 21, 2022, at 11:30 a.m. with a 30-minute visitation prior to the service at R.T. Foard Funeral Home, P.A., 111 S. Queen St., Rising Sun, MD, 21911. Friends and family are invited to join a luncheon that will follow immediately at 11 Wyndham Lane in Elkton, MD.
