Charles L. Scott, 93, of Elkton, MD, died February 11, 2014 at Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Born June 5, 1920 in Baltimore, MD, he was the son of the late Charles F. Scott and Clare L. Scott.

Charles was a retired engineer and attorney and member of the greatest generation.

In his early years he moved to New York City, where his family owned commercial and residential properties.

Charles returned to Baltimore where he graduated from Baltimore Polytechnic in 1937. He graduated from Stevens Institute of Technology in 1941 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and became employed by Baltimore Gas and Electric Company.

Upon the outbreak of World War II, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was commissioned as an Ensign in 1942. Charles served in the 36th CB’s in the South Pacific from 1942 through 1944 mostly in the Solomon and Russell Islands, including the Bougainville Campaign. In 1945 he was recalled to Oceanside, CA and detached as the explosives officer to the Marine Battalion at Camp Pendleton preparing for the invasion of the Japanese Home Islands, when Japan surrendered. He went on inactive status in 1946 with the rank of Lieutenant.

After the war, Charles returned to work at BG&E, and attended the University of Maryland School of Law in the evening, where he met his future bride, Doris L. Peterson, graduating with a J.D. in 1949.

In 1951 Charles went to work for the DuPont Company in Wilmington, DE, and he and his wife moved to Elkton. Originally, in the Engineering Department, Charles transferred to the International Department, where he worked until retiring in 1982.

In 1982 Charles joined his wife in the family law practice and ran the Columbus W. Thorn Foundation, which loans money to Cecil County students to attend college, until his death. During Charles’ tenure, the Foundation grew fifteen fold.

Charles was a devoted husband, avid yachtsman, and bridge player. He was a former member of the Potapskut Sailing Association and Annapolis Yacht Club. He was a communicant of the Trinity Episcopal Church for over 50 years and a former vestryman.

Charles is survived by his wife of sixty-six years, Doris P. Scott of Elkton, MD; two sons, Charles L. Scott, Jr. of Earleville ,MD and David S. Scott of Baltimore, MD; four grandchildren; and his brother, Donald B. Scott of Palm Beach, FL.

Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Trinity Episcopal Church in Elkton.
