Charles Joseph “Joe” Schertz, age 80, of Rising Sun, MD, passed away on Tuesday, August 29, 2017 at Southern Chester County Medical Center in Jennersville, PA. He was born on December 24, 1936 in West Des Moines, IA to the late Marion Earl and Florence Lucile (Baker) Schertz.

Joe attended and graduated from the University of Iowa, earning a Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering. He served his country in the Army from 1954 to 1966 both active duty and reserves. Joe worked at the Rock Island Arsenal and Aberdeen Proving Ground from which he retired.

Joe enjoyed attending and videotaping his sons wrestling matches. He loved his family and especially the times spent together at the family cabin in Perrault Falls, Canada. Ever the handyman, he would always work on projects around the house. Joe enjoyed playing computer games, or would use the computer for his genealogical research. He was a member of American Legion Post #194. In addition to his family, he also loved his cats.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Deborah; his daughter, Leslie Renee MacCauley of Elkton, MD; sons, Steve Schertz, and his wife, Pam, of Salisbury, MD, Jeff Schertz, of Peculiar, MO, and Bret Schertz, and his wife, Holly, of Finksburg, MD; brothers, Robert Schertz, his wife, Brenda, of Davenport, IA, and Jack Schertz, and his wife Renate, of Superior, AZ; eight grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his brother, Lyle Schertz and grandson, Jacob Schertz.

A Life Celebration Service will be held at 11AM on Saturday, September 2, 2017 at R.T. Foard Funeral Home, P.A., 111 South Queen Street, Rising Sun, MD 21911. Friends and family may visit from 6-8PM on Friday, September 1, 2017 and one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Inurnment will follow at Brookview Cemetery in Rising Sun, MD.
