Catharine “Kit” Kirk, 100, a lifelong resident of Rising Sun, passed away Sunday September 23, 2012 at her home.
Kit was born on December 28, 1911, the daughter of the late Allen and Maud Newlin Kirk and grew up in Rising Sun, first attending Miss Mabel Reynolds’ School, and when she was 12, enrolled as a day student at West Nottingham Academy. After graduation, she spent some time abroad and then enrolled at the University of Maryland, becoming a licensed pharmacist in the 1930s. She returned to Rising Sun and worked alongside her stepfather, Clarence Ashby, eventually taking over the store. Through the years, the pharmacy and then the soda fountain were phased out, and Ashby’s became a gift store, known for its elaborate Christmas displays.
She is survived by her cousin Richard White and his children, Diane White, Joyce White Malamut and John White.
A graveside service will be held at West Nottingham Cemetery on Saturday September 29, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Northern Chesapeake Hospice Foundation c/o R.T. Foard Funeral Home, PO Box 248, Rising Sun, MD 21911.
