Carol J. Alexander, 89, died at home on Wednesday, January 29th; she passed in the company of her beloved son, William C. Alexander in South Park PA. Carol was born in Montgomery County, PA to Helen M. Weise and Edmund C. Hedge. Carol had strong connections to Philadelphia and spent many summers in the Northeast with her Aunts, Uncles, and cousins on their family farm. She and her sister, Helen, grew up in Washington Heights then the Bronx, NYC. Carol met her dear husband, Charles M. Alexander, through a work association of their parents; both of their parents worked at The Metropolitan Transit Authority. Carol and Charles soon moved to Newark, DE and started a family; a son, Bill Alexander and a daughter, Patricia aka Greta. Carol stayed most of her adult life in the same neighborhood where she became lifelong friends with her neighbors. Together they raised their children, played cards, had gourmet club. They shared stories and parenting advice over coffee at the kitchen table and laughed with each other over cocktails at dinner parties.
Carol loved to laugh and very much enjoyed the camaraderie of her coworkers and throughout her life she had an incredible work ethic. Carol decided to go back to Nursing School, juggling parenting of young children and studying, she was proud to become an RN. She worked mostly as a pediatric nurse and was adored by her patients and colleagues. Starting her career at A.I. Dupont then on to Union Hospital for many years and then finally the private practice of Dr. Hsu; she worked well into her 70’s. She lived a long productive life full of love, affection and respect from her friends, family and colleagues. She survived the loss of her husband at 51, breast cancer in her 60’s, and in the last few years adapted to the vagaries of dementia before finally losing her life to an aneurysm.
Carol was a Christian woman who found great joy in listening to the hymns of her spiritual traditions. In church she found fellowship and comfort celebrating the glory and peaceful teachings of Jesus Christ. Handel’s Messiah was among her favorite pieces of music, her children will continue to listen to the Hallelujah Chorus every Christmas and think of her. She had a good life.
Carol is survived by her sister, Helen Spellman (the late Harry), her children, William Alexander (Chris) and Greta aka Patricia Alexander (Kate). Her grandchildren Deanna Alexander, Lindsay, Michael and great grandchild, Jordyn. And her much loved kitty cat, Midnight.
