Carlotta Fay Shaffer, 90 formally of Cumberland, passed away Wednesday, January 3, 2024 in Elkton, MD.
Born October 24, 1933 in Martinsburg, WV she was the daughter of the late Carl Allen Liller and Sarepta Ellen (Garner), Liller, Hovermale.
Carlotta was preceded in death by her husband – William L. Shaffer, Sr.; son – William L. Shaffer Jr.; sister – Lorraine Stemple of Berkley Springs, WV; and brother – Charles B. Liller of Fort Meyers, FL.
Carlotta was a long-serving member of First Presbyterian Church of Cumberland from the age of four until her death. She married her husband, William Lee Shaffer on August 15, 1954 at First Presbyterian Church in Cumberland, where she continued to be an active member of church life. She served as a Senior High Youth Fellowship Leader; driver for Christian Neighbors; served on the Pastoral Nominating Committee; served on the worship committee; and a trustee for Special Ministries.
She was a participating member of Pythian Sisters and previously served as District Deputy for the State of Maryland; and a fifty-year plus member of Morning Star Temple #1 of Lonaconing, MD. Carlotta bowled on the Winchester Mixed League at “The Bowler” in LaVale, MD. She was also chairwoman, for thirty-one years, of “Christmas in September,” for the Lewis Family Reunion.
Carlotta graduated from Allegany High School, class of 1953. She worked at Nicodemus National Bank in Hagerstown, MD and First National Bank in Cumberland, MD. Carlotta and her late husband Bill owned C&C Tires for eighteen years.
Carlotta and Bill enjoyed many summers at their place in Deep Creek Lake, MD; early travels in their motor home; and later taking trips to Jamaica, Bermuda, Hawaii and several cruises around the Caribbean Islands. They traveled abroad to Germany, Italy, and Austria where they attended the 1976 pre-Olympic Winter Games. While in Switzerland they had an opportunity to ski the Swiss Alps.
Carlotta loved working in her garden with flowers; was an avid reader; and always sent cards to the sick, shut-ins and sympathy cards for deceased family members, thus becoming known as “The Card Lady.”
Carlotta is survived by two daughters – A. Christine Shaffer, of North East, MD and Brenda K. (Shaffer) McKenzie and husband Gary L. of Elkton, MD; grandson, Jonathan W. McKenzie and wife Lucy (Owen); great-grandsons, Michael R. and Thomas O. of Leesburg, VA; granddaughter, Marlise (McKenzie) Gilley; great-grandsons, Ryan C. and Kyle W. Gilley of Bel Air, MD; and many nieces and nephews.
A “Celebration of Life” service will be held at First Presbyterian Church of Cumberland, on Monday, January 15, 2024. Visitation will be from 10-11AM, service at 11AM, interment to follow. It will be Live Streamed on YouTube at: http:www.youtube.com/@FirstPresCumberlandMD
