Calvin DeShields Sr.

February 16, 1960 - January 10, 2014

Calvin L. DeShields Sr., age 53, passed away on January 10, 2014, at his home in Newark, DE. He was born on February 16, 1960 in Laurel, DE to the late Levin Ennis and Alice M. DeShields.

Calvin was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps. He was a 6th degree black belt in the art of Taekwondo who enjoyed his family and spending time with his children. Calvin was the life of any party and always made people feel good.

He is survived by his Companion, JoAnn Caldwell of Newark, DE; second mother, Betty Murray and her husband Verdel Murray Sr.; second father, Raymond Young of Wilmington, DE; sons, Calvin L. DeShields Jr. of Northeast, MD and Nathan Caldwell of Newark, DE; daughters, Kelly DeShields of Wilmington, DE and Desiree Caldwell-DeShields of Newark, DE; Brothers, Levin, Wilbur, and Charles DeShields, Steven, Johnathan and Verdel Murray Jr.; sisters, Maria and Vanessa DeShields, Joanne Brown, Claudia, Crystal, and Evon Murray as well as 2 granddaughters and a host of nieces and nephews and a close family friend, Jayne Marshall. He is predeceased by one brother, Richard E. DeShields who died in March of 1992 as well as his son William DeShields in 1996.

His preceded in death by his mother and father, Levin Ennis and Alice M. DeShields.

Services are pending. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations in Calvins name be made payable to the Caldwell-DeShields Education Fund and/or The Autism Foundation, and mailed to the funeral home.

I went to school with Calvin, he was always a good guy, always filled with great energy and vitality.In school and outside of school always ready to lend a hand and he was always a happy go lucky kind of guy.I am truly sorry to hear about his passing and my condolences go out to his family and his close friends although I hadn't seen him for a while his personality,his goodness,his respect for people and his heart of Gold will be missed tremendously.I WILL LEAVE YOU WITH THIS ,Although we thank GOD for the memories,In the shadow of death one of our loved ones has been swept, A rare moment of silence is so hard to accept,But out of the eyeys of many tears have left,but for better or worse the secret is always kept.A of time discomfort is a time of regret.Family and friends we often ask that question why,I look to see him again in the freindly skies.May GOD keep you and comfort you and keep you in perfect peace and may HE make his face to shine down upon you throughout enternity.GOD BLESS.

I was so shocked when I heard that Calvin had passed. it's been a while since I've seen him, but he was part of the family! My uncle Raymond Young took him in and was a father figure to Calvin since he was in high school. He was a very nice man, and could always make us laugh. He will be missed. My condolences go to his wife, Joann and the children!! God bless!

I've known Calvin for 30+ years. I grew up knowing him from the East-Side of Wilmington when we were young adults. He was a cool brother who loved martial arts. He wasn't that much older than me but he was like a protector when he was around in my neighborhood making sure we were alright. He's someone I have fond memories of for the way he looked out for us back then. I'm so sorry to hear of his passing and my heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with the family and the many friends Calvin had here in Delaware and abroad. He will be sorely missed. My condolences to the family. I am truly sorry for your loss. I hope it brings you comfort to know you have a chance to see your loved again. Jesus promised at John 5:28,29 that "all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out." I hope the best for you all during this time of distress.

Calvin was an extraordinary and extremly secret at times. Wild and courageous was his style of life. Growing up with a brother like him was never a dull moment, he wanted to be like many action hero's; but found it very painful when trying to do so. Now he is his own hero, as long as he is done with pain and suffering in the natural world. As we all shall cross this path of pain and suffering no more. May God be with his soul and spirit, contiuelly blessing his family. Sadly submitted his brother Levin and his family; AMEN!!!!!!

Calvin was a wonderful father, grandfather, and husband he always knew when I needed a laugh. Our home is not the same without him. I loved you and still do with all my heart. You will truely be missed. You can rest in peace I promise I will take great care of Nathan and Desiree . I will also promise that I will be there for Calvin and Kelly and the grandkids. RIP honey I love you and miss you

Calvin was a great friend and co worker when we work at Deluz mcdonalds. Sorry for the loss of calvin deshields. He was a great man, father, and grandfather. Rest in peace. Sincerely renee and daughter kelsey

Calvin was my neighbor for 6 years, not only was he my neighbor he was a great friend. His daily good day knocks on the door will be missed. My heart goes out to the Caldwell Desheilds family. May god be with you at this time of need.

Calvin was a good freind of mine back in the day although I looked at him as a brother we lived together with the lide,s on 36th st. In Wilmington.He was truly a karate champion, I wanted to see Calvin again one day...I am very saddened of his passing.
