Bruce E. Hubbard passed away at the age of 79 on Sunday, February 1, at Christiana Hospital. He was an attorney in Newark who loved to run, golf, ski, as well as enjoy nature in White Clay Creek State Park.
Bruce was born in Winona, Minnesota, to Peggy and Ralph Hubbard. He was the oldest of three boys and spent his childhood enjoying outdoor activities on Lake Winona. His ice-skating skills would later land him a spot as one of only two men on the over-55 synchronized skating team, the Delaware Dazzles. In his youth, Bruce became an Eagle Scout and spent six weeks at sea with his troop on a naval ship to the Philippines. After attending Hamline University, Bruce served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War, translating Russian communications. He attended law school at University of Toledo and then settled down in Newark, Delaware, in 1976.
Bruce was an avid runner, completing thirty marathons, a half-Ironman, four eight-hour survival races, and 1100 road races. He was also a dedicated Blue Hens fan, holding football season tickets for over forty years and serving a term as President of the Touchdown Club. A man of few words, Bruce also had a silly side. He would dress up like Santa Claus on Christmas day and jog around Newark, with April Anderson, his wife of 51 years, joining him as Mrs. Claus. When his children were young, Bruce enjoyed driving an RV and took countless road trips with his family, near and far.
Bruce leaves behind his ex-wife April, his children Reid and Sally, his son-in-law Bob Khurana and the extended Khurana family, and his grandchildren Amelia, Deven, and Ethan. He is also survived by his brothers Doug and Glen, and his nieces and nephews.
The family will not be holding services immediately but will plan a Celebration of Life to be held in the spring.
