Betty Louise (Singles) Rhoads of Newark, DE, passed away on Friday August 6, 2021 surrounded by family after a long battle with Leukemia. She was preceded by her husband of 45 years, Max {Dusty} Rhoads of Corydon, Indiana. Betty Lou is survived by two sons, John D. Rhoads and Chadd A. Rhoads of Newark, DE; two grandchildren, Abigail Rhoads and Vaughn Rhoads, and a rescue dog Lucky Girl.
Betty Lou was a graduate of Newark High School Class of 1959. She trained at the Delaware Hospital in Wilmington and was a certified Histologist. She worked there several years before moving to the University of Delaware, biology, and then later the Dupont Company, Haskell, as a research technician in charge of their histology laboratories. On the side, she had a Delaware real estate license and her favorite job was buying, selling and renting vacation properties.
Retiring after 37 years, Betty Lou and Max spent their winters in Islamorada, Florida Keys and Bimini, The Bahamas. They spent their summers in Newark and their beach house in Indian River. Both avid fishermen they traveled to many interesting places that combined tourism and deep-sea fishing. After Max passed, Betty Lou continued to travel with her two sisters, Joanne of Port St. Lucie, Florida and Grace Singles of Newark, Delaware on what they called their “sister” trips. She visited more than 35 countries. The two most memorable trips were the month camping and fishing in Alaska and the three-week safari in Kenya and Tanzania. She was an active member of the Newark Senior Center where she spent many hours playing pinochle and mahjong with friends. She was also a member of the Senior Social Women’s Club and the Senior Surfers Club.
A committal service will be held in the chapel at 1:00 pm on Wednesday, August 25, 2021 at the Delaware Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Rd., Bear, DE 19701. In lieu of flowers, the family requests you give memorable gifts to your favorite charity.
