Bertha Jackson Sager, 98, of Chesapeake City, MD passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on July 16, 2016. Born on January 16, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Walter Avery and Frances (Aument) Jackson.
Bertha was born in Elk Mills, MD where she went on to attend a one room school house. She then transferred to Elkton High School where she graduated in the class of 1935. Bertha then entered the work force holding many jobs throughout her years including at: the Banking and Trust Company of Elkton, Home Extension Services of Elkton, Bainbridge Naval Training Center, Walter Cooling in the Savings and Loan Association, Cooling’s Hardware Store in Chesapeake City, and as Executive Secretary for the Cecil County Board of Education Superintendent of Schools where she worked for three different Superintendents. Bertha moved to Chesapeake City, MD in 1937 where she resided for the rest of her life. She was a member of Elk Mills United Methodist Church as a child and then joined Trinity United Methodist Church upon her move to Chesapeake City, remaining active with various groups within the church. Bertha’s greatest joy in life was spending cherished time with her family.
Bertha is survived by her daughter, Barbara S. Dean of Chesapeake City, MD; son-in-law, Greg Claypool of Louisville, KY; sister, Frances Astle of Oxford, PA; five grandchildren: Michael Mabry and wife, Marcia, John Mabry and wife, Ann, Jennifer Mabry, Devin Claypool and wife, Shannon, and Lynnelle Morgan and husband, Michael; twelve great-grandchildren: Casey Mabry, Cayla Mabry, Trevor Long, Olivia Long, Emma Long, J.T. Mabry, Dani Mabry, Nicki Mabry, Sami Mabry, Finley, Sawyer and Blythe Claypool. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, John A. Sager, and her daughter, Mary S. Claypool as well as sisters, Violet Hartman, Barbara Breitenbach and brothers Albert and Walter Jackson.
The family would like to thank the many people who helped care for our mother during her
many years of illness.
A celebration of Bertha’s life will be held at 12 PM on Friday, July 22, 2016 at Trinity United Methodist Church, 450 3rd St, Chesapeake City, MD 21915, where friends and family may visit beginning at 11 AM. Burial will follow the service at Bethel Cemetery. Contributions in Bertha’s honor may be made payable to “Trinity United Methodist Church” or “Chesapeake City Little League” and sent care of R.T. Foard Funeral Home, P.A., P.O. Box 248, Rising Sun, MD 21911.
