Bernard “Bernie” Bartholomew Brady, age 97, of Earleville, MD, formally of Mt. Ephraim, NJ passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 19, 2024. He was born on September 27, 1927, in Philadelphia, PA. Bernie was the son of Paul Richard Brady, Sr., and Catherine (McCarthy) Brady.
A proud veteran, Bernie’s service to his country began in the Navy during World War II, followed by being drafted to active duty in the Army during the Korean War. His bravery and commitment to duty earned him 2 Bronze Stars and a Distinguished Unit Citation. After receiving his honorable discharge, Bernie went on to dedicate many years to serving his community as a Letter Carrier for the United States Postal Service. His commitment and dedication to his fellow workers led him to serve as President of the Union for the National Association of Letter Carriers. Bernie was also an active member of several organizations, including the Harbour North Yacht Club, Lower Cecil County Senior Citizens, Cecilton Lions Club, and Chesapeake City VFW, where he made long-lasting friendships.
Outside of work and service, Bernie found joy in boating on the waters of the Chesapeake Bay and Bohemia River, creating cherished memories with family and friends. A lifelong sports enthusiast, he was an avid fan of Philadelphia teams, cheering for the Eagles, Phillies, and Flyers. His love for sports extended to his own experiences, having been a rowing coxswain in high school and later supporting his children and grandchildren as they pursued their athletic dreams.
Bernie’s enthusiasm for life was evident in his hobbies. Whether he was bowling with friends, ushering shows at Cecil College alongside his loving wife, or traveling down the New Jersey shore to Sea Isle, and Wildwood he embraced every opportunity. He was known for hosting gatherings, particularly his famous Christmas and St. Patty’s Day parties. He will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Bernie is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Joanne Fanz Brady; children: Elizabeth Avis (husband, Brad), Kathryn Bradley (husband, Kevin), and Bernie S. Brady; grandchildren: Gregory Avis, and Kenneth Bradley; many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Bernie is preceded in death by his brother, Paul R. Brady, Jr.
A celebration of Bernie’s life will be held on Thursday, January 2, 2025, at 11:30 AM at R.T. Foard Funeral Home, 318 George Street, Chesapeake City, MD 21915 where family and friends may begin visiting at 10:30 AM. Burial will follow at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
