I am also thinking of Ben-dad on this day, the anniversary of Ben's passing. His memory will live on in the hearts of all of us who knew him from the Wildlife Center. Ben-dad, I hope that you are comforted by sweet memories, and by knowing that there are many of us out there who care. Continuing to pray for you, especially on this day.

My heartfelt condolences to Ben's family, I pray that you find comfort during this most difficult time. He was such a wonderful young man, and his love for animals and wildlife just enhanced his spirit. He now thrives in our Lords garden and is surrounded by pure love
Minnie Fleming left a message on May 9, 2015:
Terribly sorry to read of Ben's passing. His habitual jaunty grin and wave to the camera audience added to the pleasure of following the progress of the eaglets at the Wildlife Center of Virginia. It takes a very special person to tend to the daily needs of wild animals who have come into care. Though young, he made a difference for the better in this world. My heart goes out to Ben's family and friends. I wish you peace.
Peace of mind is a call away. We’re here when you need us most.
Sue from MA left a message on May 8, 2015:
A life cut short, but it touched so many and made so many people happy. I am one of those that waved back when Ben waved to the camera. I looked forward to the times he would join the chat. His passion and compassion would shine through. To the family - you can tell by all the testimonials that he had an enormous impact on people he never met. My sincere condolences to you all, and I hope all these comments give you comfort in knowing that his life wasn't long, but his influence is. Now that he has his angel's wings, I hope he is soaring in heaven with Mom Norfolk.
Stephen Veenker left a message on May 8, 2015:
OK, so what's so special about Ben? We WCV watchers have met dozens of dedicated young people who do what it takes, long hours, huge investment, and we grow attached them and then they move on. We admire them, we credit them with huge successes, and we champion their careers after they matriculate and move on. We love to hear of their exploits Post WCV. But Ben is different somehow. He made scooping poop look like fun. When he smiled or grinned and waved at us watching him, he told us, "You are right, this is fun!" And we had fun with him. He understood that we would all love to change places with him, if only for 45 minutes. We all envied the fun he demonstrated, and represented for all his fellow workers. He knew what we felt, and reflected it for us. I have often told my children, there are two days, called birth and death, in our lives. We never know how much space is between them. But what really counts is what we make of those days. Ben helped lots of nature's creatures, and spread joy and understanding to thousands of us who never met him, beyond the hundreds of real-life friends and his adoring family. THAT is what's so special about Ben. We all carry that legacy. In that sense, he really isn't "gone" s long as any of us survives here. Blessings on your family; let us always be part of it, as you are of ours.

So very sorry to hear of Ben's early passing...may he rest easy and remain forever in your hearts. We all loved 'Talon Boy' who watched the cam at WCV...always looked forward to his additions to the online chat with updates on the eaglets. Such a great spirit that shined through...very sorry for your loss

Although I never met Ben, I, too, knew him through the Critter Cams at the Wildlife Center of Virginia where he so generously gave of his time and love. By the many posts shown, it is evident that he was truly loved by all who knew him. May God shower him with all His blessings and love in return. My condolences to his family and friends.
Amanda Nicholson left a message on May 4, 2015:
Many students pass through the halls of the Wildlife Center each year, but few are as memorable as Ben. Ben was so fun to work with -- he was hard-working, funny, and easy-going, with a great sense of humor. He went above and beyond while here -- Ben not only cared for the many patients that came through the Center's doors, but also embraced the public education, which is not something many rehab externs are interested in. I think his year-end post for the Wildlife Center's website shows how thoughtful and caring he was -- while also showing that wry sense of humor. http://wildlifecenter.org/news_events/news/2011-year-review-ben-spence Ben, you will be remembered and missed. To the Spence family, I got to know Ben on-line through the cam at the Wildlife Center of VA. I hope you can find peace knowing that Ben touched so many lives and made a difference in the lives of the many animals he helped save. He had a special gift that he willingly shared and his love of animals was visable to all. I know Ben is now soaring with the eagles and running with the wolves.

As a member of Critter Nation, I'm so sad to hear of Ben's passing. I'll always remember him fondly as our Talon Boy. He was such fun to watch on the Critter Cam as he always had a cheerful smile and a jaunty wave whenever he was on. You could tell that he was where he loved to be, doing what he loved to do. My sympathy, prayers and love are with you during this most difficult and sad time.

Ben, I will miss you. I'm not good with expressing myself, and I spent most of last night trying to think of what to write here. You had wit and humor that will be sorely missed in this world. I was looking forward to seeing you again at Otakon, too. It won't be the same without you there. Thanks for taking me to prom in highschool, I was super excited and I had a great time. It was one of the best memories I have of you. I should of took the time to talk to you more, but our paths grew apart as we grew older and now I feel guilty for it. I hoped that one day, when we were older, we could look back at everything that happened between us and laugh about it. We will miss you Ben.

To the Spence family, I was so saddened to read of Ben's untimely passing. I came to know him because of three eaglets that came to the WCV after their mom was lost. He was a "rock star" in his own right on the web cam and a lot of people looked forward to his "on cam presence". It is wonderful to see from all of the postings here how much of an impact he made on people day to day and I hope that gives you comfort during this difficult time. Peace be with you all. Ben is surely with God's animals.

Ben, or Benji, as I liked to call him despite his evil eye every time I did, was a special person. I had the privilege of working along side Ben as a fellow zookeeper for 2 years and we certainly shared plenty of memories together, both good and bad. At times our job was anythint but easy, but we got through it as a team and shared plenty of laughs and tears. Ben was a true hero on June 13th, 2013 when he played a crucial part in saving an interns life who had been struck by lightening at the zoo. Although we both struggled to get over the incident and felt maybe we should have done more, I couldn't have been more proud of Ben and the courage he displayed that day. The days, weeks, and months following the incident were a struggle having to relive the trauma n our heads, but we were there for eachother and I truly thank him for that. Ben could come off as rather rough at times haha, but myself and his other keeper friends saw a different side of him that not many people did. We saw his genuine heart and passion. There was nothing that made him more happy than those animals and he really would have done anything for them. Although Ben did deal with a lot of demons, as we all do, he found solace among the animals and I could see it on his face every time I worked with him. I want to thank him for his caring nature, his simple, but bright smile, and his sarcasm that made us all laugh. I still can't believe he will no longer be here to vent with or to share our passion of adorable animal videos together but his spirit will live on and the memories will never be forgotten. I can only hope that he is now happy where ever he may be and that he rest in peace. I was always proud of you Ben, and am grateful for the friendship we shared.

I am so sorry for your loss. I was one of the webcam viewers, and WCV's was only the second wildlife cam I ever watched. So many of us would have traded places with Ben to be able to do what he was doing. His smile and wave humanized the viewing of the cam for so many of us from far away. You were lucky to have him, and we are grateful that you have shared his stories with us. Thank you. Thank you.

So deeply sorry for your loss. I, like so many others here, watched Ben on the cam at WCV & always anticipated the smiles & waves he sent all of us who watched our beloved eagle babies. Ben-Dad, a friend whose husband had passed away once told me that people described it as a loss. She said that it was not a "loss" that her husband had left her to go to a very special place to live in heaven because there was a job that he needed to do. Talon-Boy will be deeply missed by his family and friends here on earth. But perhaps, because of his love of animals, he was needed to be the caretaker at the Rainbow Bridge. A salute and a bow to you Ben as you take on this new job. Sending prayers to the family as you go through the coming hours, days, weeks and months.

I too knew Ben through the WCV webcam and am broken hearted over the loss of this young man. Your family has been and will continue to be in my prayers. Ben's endearing smile and thoughtful wave always brought cheer and comfort to everyone watching. All of the people working at the WCV obviously have a special love for animals, but there was something unique that radiated from Ben. As a parent, I believe we all hope that our children will grow up to have a positive impact on the world around them and will be respected by those they come into contact with. I dearly hope that Ben's family is comforted in knowing that Ben did just that. He truly made a great difference in the world around him - not just for the animals he cared about but also for hundreds of people, many he never even met. What a wonderful legacy.

I am truly heartbroken to hear this news and all my thoughts are with Ben's family right now. I met Ben whilst working as a veterinarian at the Wildlife Center of Virginia. I arrived at the center from England after Ben was well established as an eagle cam celebrity. He made me so welcome in a foreign land and it was clear that he had such incredible passion for his work there. I am saddened that I didn't stay in better contact with Ben after he left the center but it was great to see updates of what he was up to on Facebook. My sincere sympathies go to Ben's family.

My deepest sympathies to Ben's family during this sorrowful time. It is so hard to lose someone so dear. As I read all the messages here, I can't help but feel the love each one contains. Ben captured so many hearts while he was at WCV, including mine. His caring nature shined through the camera and reached us all. He gave all his heart and soul to the animals he cared for and it spilled out to those of us who looked forward to seeing him smile and wave to Critter Nation everyday. We loved chatting with Ben-Dad and discovered where Ben got his love for life. We felt an emptiness when Ben left WCV, but knew he was moving on to better things. We feel it again now. I want to think one of the first greetings he received when he got to heaven is Mom Norfolk. I am sure she wanted to thank him for taking care of her eaglet babies when she couldn't. I pray that the healing hand of God comforts the family now and strengthens you in the days ahead. God bless you.

My deepest sympathies to Ben-dad and the entire Spence family. Ben was a person of special gifts given to him by God to work with animals/critters/pets. He just had a special way of caring for them in "their" time of need. When Ben realized he had a special following by Critter Nation, rather than ignore it, he embraced us-each and every one of us. What a joy it was for us to see him wave and know we were smiling right back at him! My heart cries for Ben and his family but I also know he is in Heaven where he can care for every animal which crosses the rainbow bridge. Prayers for Ben's family, WCV and Critter Nation.

I am terribly saddened by the news of Ben's sudden passing. Deeply passionate about all creeping, crawling, galloping, and flying creatures of the earth, Ben was truly a rarity among human kind. His humor, insight, and company will be greatly missed by myself, as I often relied on him for conversation and a compassionate heart. He was a kind soul, and always knew how to make me laugh. All he wanted to ever do was kiss wolves and hug baby prairie dogs. I will always remember him, as I'm sure the animals he cared for will too... Rest in peace, my friend :(

Ben-dad and all of Ben's family. I am also one of the "on-line wildlife center watchers" who came to "know" Ben while he was at WCV. I know that's not the same as truly knowing someone--but I believe with all my heart, those who love and care for animals have an amount of compassion and tenderness inside that cannot be matched. I don't know what happened to Ben, I only know he was much too young to leave this earth, and my heart truly aches for you, his family. I read this quote and wanted to share it with you: "There is love in the holding on and love in the letting go. There's an awful ache in surrender, but real thankfulness beyond the hurt. In joy and in sorrow, in life and death, God is good." As you can see from all of these posts, Ben made quite an impact. Your family will be in my prayers as you grieve such a terrible loss. May the Lord give you peace, even as you mourn.

The dedication and passion that Ben brought to the zoo was simply inspiring and made him one of the best keepers I've had the privilege to with with and call a friend. He truly cared about every animal he took care of and loved them like they were his own, always going above and beyond to provide for and enrich them. No matter the circumstances, he could always lighten the mood of everyone in the room with his dry and sarcastic humor. Ben, you will be sorely missed. There will always be an empty seat now at the "Zoo Crew" table for you...

I am so saddened to hear of the loss of your son Ben. I was an avid viewer of the Critter Cam in 2011 and most certainly enjoyed watching Ben care for those three eaglets. The whole Eagle Nation waited patiently each day to watch Talon Boy perform his duties. Please know you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. Sincerely, Kathy Feher from western Pa.

I remember Ben from the WCV. Talon Boy, a nickname he earned when having an encounter with a juvenile eagle, was a much loved member of that organization. I will miss him.

Although I knew you, Ben, only through the WCV critter cams and chat, you touched me with your smile, your wave, your gentle ways with wild life. My thoughts and prayers are with your family, may they find comfort knowing how special you were to so many.
Kate Guenther left a message on May 1, 2015:
In those crazy days of 2011 at the Wildlife Center we were all adjusting to the wild attention those baby eaglets were getting on the online cams. The cams were new for us and the whole staff was adjusting to what it meant for our work to suddenly go public in such a new way. Ben was there in the middle of it all, doing his work and taking his weird celebrity-dom in stride. He was a quiet, funny loving presence at the center at a time when we were all a little nuts! His deep compassion and service is what not only helped the animals in his care, but helped us all maintain our sense of humor under stress. I'm glad it was meaningful for him, too. Thank you, Ben. I love your smile.

So very saddened to learn of the loss of our Ben, Talon Boy...I only knew him through the Wildlife Center of Virginia's cam, during his care of our "Rock Stars"..He stole our hearts, when he got "bombed" by one of the eaglets...and then started sheepishly waving to the cam, and we all waved back...so very happy that Dancelady made the video of his last day at work there...I bow back to you, Ben...Fly high with Lady Legacy, and perhaps friends from the Rainbow Bridge welcomed you, too....Ben-Dad...no words can let you know how very sorry I am for your loss...I hope it helps to know how many people love Ben..

I am so deeply sorry to hear of the passing of Ben. So many of us knew him from his time at the Wildlife Center, where his smile lit up the room, his love of the critters was so abundantly obvious, and his regular waves on the camera made us wave back! I was also privileged to meet him at the eagle release in July of that year, and as always, he was polite and friendly to all. Please accept my deepest sympathies, and may the Lord grant you His comfort during these sad days.

I will miss Ben so much. Since I moved we haven't talked much but every time I can home I made sure to see him, and it was like no time had passed and nothing had changed. He was a great person, even though he didn't always see it in himself. Ben was one of the most passionate animal lovers ever and I know he is looking over all of our zoo animals now and forever. I miss you already!

I am deeply saddened to hear of your loss. Ben (Talon Boy) touched the lives of so many through the Wildlife Center of Virginia's Critter Cam with his Salute and wave...and his determination to assist in the rehabilitation of wildlife. We enjoyed reading his enthusiastic words on the Critter Cam Chat. It was obvious that he held a deep love for wildlife...from tiny birds or snakes...to not quite flight worthy eaglets. You will be in our thoughts and prayers. May your sadness be soon replaced with warm and loving memories of this special young man who touched the lives of so many in such a positive way.
