Beatrice ‘Bea’ Mae McMullen, of Rising Sun, MD, passed away on Wednesday, January 11, 2012 at Union Hospital at the age of 102. Bea was born in Hopewell, PA to the late Clyde G. and Nancy L. (Starr) Pyle on March 3, 1909.
When Bea was small her family moved to Cecil County to work on farms in the Rock Springs area. She graduated from seventh grade at the little school on the hill in Liberty Grove. In 1929, Bea married Harry ‘Sam’ McMullen in Zion, MD. They were blessed with four children. Once the children were in school, Bea began working at Aerial Products and later became a telephone operator for Cecil Farmers. She was known as a ‘Hello Girl’.
Bea enjoyed a full life. She loved to sew, crochet and knit. She also enjoyed gardening, making slipcovers and upholstery and doing alterations. She travelled often and visited Mount Rushmore, Hawaii, England, Ireland, Scotland and Germany. She watched little television – the weather, the Baltimore Orioles and once in a while ‘a good program’.
She is survived by her son, Samuel McMullen and his wife, Barbara of Rising Sun, MD; daughters, Catherine Mae Lane of Rising Sun, MD, Nancy Jane Repsher and her husband, Fred of Cochranville, PA, and Lola Hosler of Surry, ME; sister, Lola Coale of Rising Sun, MD; 9 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; and 4 great great grandchildren.
Services will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, January 14, 2012 at R.T. Foard Funeral Home, PA, 111 S. Queen St., Rising Sun, MD 21911, where friends and family may call one hour prior.
Burial will follow at Brookview Cemetery in Rising Sun, MD.
