Beatrice C. Swain of Landenberg, PA, age 88 passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, November 1, 2018 surrounded by her family. She was born in Doe Run, PA on April 4, 1930 to the late Milton P. Carey and Esther (Smith) Carey.
Beatrice graduated from Avon Grove High School in 1950 and went on to work for a period of time as a telephone switchboard operator. Later, she went on to become the CEO of her household while raising 5 children. Beatrice was a member of Kemblesville United Methodist Church. She always set up her Christmas village in her home every year, which in time grew to a bustling metropolis. Beatrice enjoyed snowmobiling, traveling, vacationing with family and friends, in addition to spending time with her grandchildren.
Beatrice is survived by her husband, Earl Swain; five children: Sharon Swain, Lawrence Swain, Todd Swain, Cindy Smith and Melinda Swain (Bret Wilson); twelve grandchildren: Heather Lawhorn, Danielle Merrill (Billy), Kyle Cochran, Sean Cochran, Tyler Cochran, Ryan Smith, Aaron Smith, Jocelyn Smith, Hannah Smith, Brandon Wilson, Heidi Wilson and Laura Wilson; and five great grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, Beatrice is preceded in death by three sisters: Pearl O. Pyle, Pauline Chestnut and Mildred Hanby; brother, Milton “Bud” Carey; grandson, Lawrence Swain, Jr.; and son-in-law, Glenn Smith.
The family wishes to thank Willow Tree Hospice for their countless hours of not only visits and support, but also the love they showed Beatrice.
A visitation will be held from 5:00 -7:00 pm on Saturday, November 10, 2018 at R.T. Foard & Jones Funeral Home, 122. W. Main St., Newark, DE 19711. A celebration of Beatrice’s life will be held on Sunday, November 11, 2018 at 2:00 pm at R.T. Foard & Jones Funeral Home, where family and friends may begin visiting at 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Beatrice’s honor may be made payable to “Willow Tree Hospice” of Kennett Square or “Kemblesville United Methodist Church” send in care of the funeral home.
