Barbara Elaine Calvarese

January 15, 1939 - August 29, 2023

Barbara and her husband Augustine opened C&L Bakery (Calvarese and Lugano) and worked there together until 1965 when they moved to Bing’s Bakery. Barbara was then hired by International Literacy Association to manage and coordinate conferences around the world and retired after 25 years. Raised in a very spiritual environment by her grandfather, she learned to fight for what she believed in, and she never lost her spirit. Barbara went on to raise her children independently, while overcoming many personal obstacles triumphally. She loved dancing in her younger years and helping people. She would host Christmas parties where everyone was welcome. Barbara’s passion for gardening brought her much happiness. She was known for having a green thumb. Barbara was also a great cook; Italian was her specialty. Barbara will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Barbara is survived by her two children, Norma C. Burkhardt (Steve), and Augustine “Gus” Calvarese Jr.; grandchildren: Kim Slozak (Kris), and Tiffany Burkhardt; great grandchildren: Brayden Slozak, Anna Slozak, and Emelia Hogerheide; siblings: Dorothy Parisi (Peter), Joyce Lockard (Sonny), Patricia Rycicki (Robert), Linda Oberly (Frank), and Randy J. Meadows (Esther); and sister-in-law, Patricia Lane.

In addition to her parents, Barbara is preceded in death by her husband Augustine J. Calvarese, Sr.; brother, Walter Fox, Jr.; and grandfather, John G. Dubosq.

At the convenience of the family, services for Barbara will be held privately. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made payable to the “Dementia Society of America” in care of R.T. Barbara was a special lady and I'm grateful to have had her for a friend. Barbara will always be in our hearts.

God has called another Angel to Heaven.

As a child Gus & Barbara were our neighbors. She was such a lady, and always was there when I needed any advise or help. I was lucky enough to help out at the C & L bakery in Stanton Delaware. My father and step mother divorced, and Barbara was always there for me. I loved her ! Norma Jean and Little Gus, your Mom was , and is an Angel . She will always have a special place in my heart. Mrs. Calvarese was a wonderful mom to her family and all those growing up around her. I remember having the privilege of drawing the ‘Philly Phanatic’ on a cast for Mrs. Calvarese. She was a sweetheart who always welcomed all into her home as if we were all family. She will be missed by all who knew her. Love you always, will see you again Mrs. Calvarese. ❤️?❤️
