Ballard Lee Howell, 79, of Rising Sun, MD passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 5, 2019 at home surrounded by family, following a period of declining health. Born on May, 13, 1940 in Pikeville, KY, he was the oldest child of Levi Howell and Amy Tackett Howell. She passed away when he was a small child.
Ballard married his high school sweetheart, R. Kay Reed, and they lived “happily ever after” for 57 years until she passed in 2017. A longtime member of Calvary Missionary Baptist Church of Rising Sun, he was a devoted and beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother and friend. He was a tree trimmer by trade, working for Henkel & McCoy and later for Asplundh trimming trees from electrical power lines until he retired.
He is survived by three daughters, Robin Brown (Mike), Candace Kammer and Amy Reynolds (Rodney), all of Rising Sun, MD, three sisters, Mary Absher (Charles) of Nottingham, PA. Ruby Gordon of Elkton, MD and Laurene Ferrell (Randall) of Wellington, KY; and five grandchildren, Jennifer Cain (Jason) of Oxford, PA. SSG Aaron Hill (Erika), stationed in South Korea, Michelle Zupancic (Brian) of Lillington, NC, Sarah Milton (Chadwick) of Wilmington, DE and Amanda Patterson (Andrew) of Elkton, MD. He is also survived by 10 beautiful great grandchildren.
Ballard was preceded in death by his wife, Kay Howell, son, Timothy Howell, brother, Larry Dale Looney, and granddaughter, Samantha Reynolds; also, his father, the Rev. Levi Howell and his mother, Vivienne Howell.
A celebration of Ballard’s life will be held on Tuesday, December 10, 2019 at 11:00 AM at Calvary Missionary Baptist Church 35 Sylmar Rd. Rising Sun, MD 21911 where friends and family may begin visiting at 10:00 AM. Burial will follow at Brookview Cemetery, Rising Sun, MD 21911.
