Audrey B. Brooks, age 94, passed away peacefully April 4, 2017 surrounded by family. She was born October 23, 1922 to the late Norman Battersby, former DE State representative, and the late Annie Battersby (Kennelly).
Audrey was born and raised in Newark, DE and is a graduate of Newark High School class of 1940. She was captain of the cheerleading, basketball, field hockey and track teams. This is also where she met her husband, the late C. Melvin “Ripper” Brooks, of 70 years. After graduation, Audrey pursued a career as a beautician and would ride the train daily to Philadelphia to study and learn the trade. She was an avid bowler, enjoyed cooking, dancing, playing cards, and was a lifelong member of the National Grange #60, Glasgow, DE, holding various positions over the years.
Audrey is survived by her daughter, Barbara Battersby McLaughlin of Elkton, MD; daughter, Elizabeth Ann Dougherty of New Castle, DE; son, C. Melvin “Gov” Brooks, Jr. (Diane) of Newark, DE; daughter, Polly Cherundolo of Newark, DE; son, Stephen Brooks (Kathy) of Vineland, NJ. She is also survived by eleven grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, one great-great grandchild and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, Audrey is preceded in death by her sister, Alice Battersby Neide; nephew, Bill Neide; nephew, Norman Neide; and grandson, Brian McLaughlin.
A visitation for Audrey will be held from 6-8 pm on Tuesday, April 11, 2017 at R.T. Foard & Jones, Inc., 122 West Main Street, Newark, DE, 19711. A celebration of Audrey’s life will be held at the funeral home, 11 am Wednesday, April 12, 2017.
