She was my 3 grade teacher she was like a step mom too me I treated her as a mom not as a teacher and I miss her too much.

She was my Fifth grade teacher in 2011 and without her I don't think I'd be here today. She was fun and always joyful and I will remember her for that.
Sandy Tabor left a message on March 5, 2014:
She was a wonderful and caring teacher and human being. It always seemed to me that she gave more to life than she took from it. She will be sorely missed.
Sue Fulmer left a message on March 4, 2014:
Every team needs a leader and Andrea was certainly mine. She would lay the ground work for a plan and I would follow. With the exception of a memorable incident which involved a canoe, the Delaware River, a set of rapids aptly named the foul rift and way too many cans of White Rock black cherry soda,(a funny story for another time) her plans were usually very good ones. When it came to my parent’s milestone anniversaries, whereas a relatively simple family dinner would have pleased my parents, Andrea jumped in with both feet and planned great surprise parties for my parent’s 25th and 50th wedding anniversaries. I was a happy and involved partner, but without her “pushing” I may have chosen the easier route. A few years ago, as my mother’s 80th birthday approached, I casually commented that it was too bad that we couldn't be in FL to celebrate with her. Well you can probably guess what happened next. Within a matter of hours, we had purchased airline tickets and just a few days later, took our sister duo on the road or more specifically to the skies. It wasn't convenient for either of us. Andrea had a classroom full of students to consider and prepare for and I had a family at home that was very accustomed to me being there to chase them out of bed every morning. With that being said, it was the best decision Andrea ever drug me in to! It wasn't much more than a long weekend, but it gave us an opportunity to relax and really enjoy our time together and with our parents. I don’t know why bad things happen to good people, but I do know that Andrea helped raise two amazing daughters, and instilled a love of learning in many young children. She will be greatly missed by her family, friends, co-workers and students…especially me. Love you forever Andrea.

I was lucky to have met Andrea when she joined the faculty at North East Elementary School. From the beginning it was obvious that she was a remarkable, dedicated and caring teacher. All students in her classes were lucky to have known her. I consider myself very fortunate to count her among my friends. Andrea was also a very talented artist. I have a polymer turkey pin that Andrea made. Every Thanksgiving when I look at it, it makes me smile. From now on it will remind me to be thankful that I knew her.
Theresa Yetter left a message on March 3, 2014:
Andrea was a great person and wonderful teacher. She was one of my favorite teachers at Calvert I volunteered to help the eight years my boys were there. I learned so much from her, and so did the kids, and she was so fun to be around. I have many clay ornaments and pins that I cherish, not only are they beautifully done but they bring back wonderful memories. I am so sorry I missed the funeral.
Susan McGowan left a message on March 2, 2014:

Our paths crossed many times, and I enjoyed working with her immensely. She was a consummate teacher and has left behind a void that will be hard to fill. I am so sorry for your loss. I hope you can find solace cherishing the memories, as she touched so many lives.
Lauren Stemple left a message on March 2, 2014:
Mrs. Keen said that she liked getting gifts from students, but she liked being told that she actually did something to help our lives better! She certainly touched my life. Her love of teaching has left behind in me a legacy of learning. She spoke to us as adults, she expected us to listen, follow our "Camp We-Do" rules and make wise choices each and every day. She loved us, was there to listen to us, and kept us on track. She wanted us to try our very best and become the amazing people she knew we could be. She encouraged my writing, teaching me writing skills that weren't normally taught in third grade. She even cleared a spot on her bookshelf for the books I will someday publish. Thank you Mrs. Keen - I will miss you, but will continue your love of learning.
Jennifer Stemple left a message on March 2, 2014:
Andrea - a confidant, inspiration, mentor and friend. You have been an amazing women and influence in my life. You weren't afraid to say it like it is, question the status quo and fight for your students. You brought humor, grace and realism to each day and especially the many professional development opportunities we attended together! I promise to bend at the knees, wear comfortable shoes so I can walk when I am 90 and laugh each day!
Annie left a message on March 2, 2014:
An amazing woman. Everytime I saw her, she had so much drive and so much love for Molly and Rachel. She included me in family gatherings, which was truly touching. It's so clear how many lives she affected. She may be gone, but her memory will live on.
Ginny Roney left a message on March 2, 2014:
I volunteered in Andrea's first grade classroom at North East Elementary when my son, Matt, was in her class in 1988. I knew right away that we were very lucky indeed. She always wore her beautiful, wide smile to brighten the kids' days. What impressed me most about Andrea was her unique ability to address each child's needs and talents - certainly not an easy task in a class of 30-or-so children - so each one could learn and grow and feel good about themselves when they met that next challenge. She instilled in them an excitement for learning. Andrea was interested in each child as a whole person. I know Matt and I will never forget her. God bless Andrea's family. A prayer that a friend gave to me once helped me so much and maybe it will help to know that I want this for all of you: I pray for an angel to visit you, To surround you with her gentle presence, To calm your spirit, To give you peace. Crystal Keefe left a message on March 2, 2014:
Andrea is one of the strongest and most passionate people I have ever met. I feel so lucky to have worked with her and learned from her during my student teaching experience. Her love of life and teaching are things that have inspired me from the first second I met her. She is full of wit and humor and I feel so blessed to have known her as a coworker as well as a friend. There is nobody in this world quite like Andrea, and I am so happy I knew her. Her legacy will live on through the many students she touched as well as anyone who ever met her. The world lost an amazing person, but we all gained the best angel we could ever ask for.

Rhonda McCommons left a message on March 2, 2014:
Andrea was my oldest son's first grade teacher at North East Elementary. Although I never taught in the same school as her we ran into each other over the years. She was by far the best elementary teacher either of my boys ever had. I still have many of the 'books' my son wrote in her class. The children who she taught over the years were blessed to be in her classroom! She will be missed.
Corinne Dochney left a message on March 1, 2014:
I had the honor and privilege of working with Andrea. She taught me so much about teaching and I learned what it meant to be a great teacher from her example. Many of my lessons I continue to use today are lessons that her and I planned together and co-taught together. Her fantastic sense of humor and wit is one of a kind. There was never a time in our interactions together when I wasn't laughing. She was a joy and inspiration to be around. I know she has left a lasting impression on each person she has met. I consider myself to be very lucky to have had the opportunity to meet and know Andrea Keen. I will miss her dearly as I know everyone will.

I've always considered Mrs. Keen one of my favorite teachers. Mom and Dad got me off to a great start, encouraging me to love reading books and learning new things. But it was those early teachers, Mrs. Keen in particular, who set me on a path for lifelong learning. I remember her constantly challenging me with harder spelling and math worksheets; this show of confidence helped make me eager for the next challenge. I remember having so much fun burning through math problems on those "Mad Minute" worksheets! Thank you, Mrs. Keen. I can only hope that our 9-month-old twins have teachers like you when they get to school!

What a great person leaving this life! Andrea's children danced at my dance school and I have to say Andrea loved children and was so giving that once we had a slumber party with about 30 dancers and she was the only mom to step forward and volunteer to chaperone. I can still see her smiling, surrounded by 30 dancers............she was as happy as they were!

On a shelf in my bedroom I have to polymer dolls that Andrea made. One for my birthday and one showing my two children as angels. Andrea created them with the same love she created every lesson she taught and every child opened her arms to. Her smile and energy were always present. Although we never worked in the same building our paths crossed many times. In addition to her passion as a teacher she had a deep passion for supporting her colleagues. Representing them in CCCTA and on many committees she made this profession better for all of us. Teachers impact children for a lifetime. Teachers who lead others to the profession touch generations. Andrea was that kind of teacher. I feel honored to have known her. My deepest sympathies are extended to her daughters, parents and those close to her.

Andrea was my daughter Jennifer's favorite teacher. We would joke about how Jennifer's brothers told her that Ms Keen was mean and would yell a lot. It wasn't true but Jennifer was scared to start second grade. She is still remembered fondly at our house when we look at the clay penguins she made us for our christmas tree or when I look at the picture she took of Jennifer and framed it for me.

I met Andrea when I took over the Challenge position at Gilpin Manor. At the time I was new to the county and new to the world of elementary teaching. From the get go it was clear that her ability to deal with the gifted kids in her room surpassed my own, but she never made me feel bad about that fact. Instead, she stayed after school to help me figure out how to reach her students. I know that doesn't sound like a huge thing, but believe me, it was. She had 50 million things to do and she took the time to pause and help me out just because I was new and I needed help. She was kind to me when she didn't have to be and I'm a better teacher because of her help.

When i met her mother Andrea Keen, for the first time, I was amazed what what a kind and generous person she was. She went out of her way to help Molly and I prepare our new apartment. She was so funny and so full of light, truely an amazing woman. It was not hard to recognize that just after meeting her for the first time. My heart and sympathy goes out to Molly and the rest of her family.

Andrea was one of the most dedicated and talented educators that I have worked with. She encouraged students with her positive words and challenged her students to achieve things beyond what they thought they could do. Not only did she touch the lives of many children, she also touched the lives of many adults. Andrea challenged me and encouraged me to persue avenues that I never thought I would. She laughed with me, cried with me, celebrated with me, and learned with me. I am proud to have worked along side of her and more importantly I am blessed to call her my friend. I will miss her dearly.

I will never forget her dressing up in a lab coat and goggles to introduce my students to "Bubbleology". My first graders ate it up! She also was willing to help my team whenever we had questions about PTD. Andrea was a big support system to me when I was sick and I will never forget this wonderful lady.

When I look back at my childhood, the Keen family is in the majority of those memories. Growing up together as not only neighbors, but also family, has left many memories...too many to share! Andrea was a large part of me wanting to grow up to be a teacher. She even let me help her grade papers sometimes, which I loved. I also volunteered in her classroom when I was in high school and eventually substituted for her when I would come home from college. I was also able to go with her to some craft shows and help her sell her clay figurines. There were camping trips and many, many more memories. So very sorry to Baby Rachel and Molly Moo Moo for their loss. Thinking of you both.

Growing up, the Keens were my second family and Andrea was like a mom to me. I have so many special memories that I will remember her by--too many to recount. Andrea was such a kind and patient person. She had a great sense of humor too, always sharing stories and laughing with us kids. When we were teenagers, I thought it was so cool that Andrea took Rachel and I to see Dave Matthews band for my birthday one year. She took all of us girls on many camping trips and always managed to keep us entertained. While Andrea was baking her clay, we would build forts in the bedrooms, play dress up in the basement, or play on the tire swing in the backyard. I loved going to craft shows with Andrea where she sold her figurines. She'd always let us girls pick out a little goody to buy. She was such a bright, creative woman. A few weeks ago, I was able to spend one last time with Andrea and through everything, she still managed to keep her bright smile. I am forever grateful to have known Andrea and for the lasting impression she has left on my life. I love and miss you and know you will watch down on all of us <3
