Alice Jane Bryant

October 19, 1911 - December 25, 2011

Alice Jane (Sheppard) Bryant, age 100, of Newark, DE, passed away at her home surrounded by her family on Sun., Dec. 25, 2011. A private interment service was held at Gracelawn Memorial Park on Sat., Dec. 31, 2011.

Mrs. Bryant founded Zephyr Knoll Day Nursery, which she operated from 1952-1972.

She was predeceased by her husband, Iven, and is survived by her daughter Barbara of Newark and son Iven (Lynne) of Wetaskiwin, Alberta, Canada; 4 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life memorial service will be held at 12 noon on Sat., Jan. 28, 2012, at Calvary Baptist Church, 215 E. Delaware Ave., Newark, DE.

Sadly, I had lost touch with the Bryants in recent years, so I was so sorry to hear of both Alice and Iven's deaths. I rented a room in their home in the early 70's and have many fond memories of them and their kindnesses to me. I remember coming home from my job as a novice elementary teacher, often frustrated with how things were going, and Alice would patiently listen and offer some very sound and practical advise, gleaned from her many years with the nursery school. Both Alice and Iven acted as my surrogate parents when I was first out on my own and I will always remember them fondly.
