Alexander C. Campbell, 90, of Conowingo, MD, passed away peacefully at the Conowingo Veterans Center on October 24, 2013.

Born in Lansing, NC on May 25, 1923, Alex was the son of the late Arthur Harrison Campbell and Ella May Osborn Campbell. He was a renowned bluegrass musician and disc jockey heard on over 250 radio stations, broadcasting from Campbell’s Corner. With his sister, Olabelle, he ran New River Ranch in Rising Sun, played music as Alex, Olabelle and the New River Boys, and brought southern food up north to be sold through their store in Oxford. Sunset Park became the venue where the band played for many years, starting a lifelong friendship with the Waltmans. He produced records under his labels of Cabin Creek and New River Records. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during World War II, and, during his service, entertained the troops performing in the band “Grandpa Jones and the Munich Mountaineers.” Alex will be remembered as a talented artist and a tireless promoter of bluegrass music.

Alex leaves behind a son, Dr. Robert Alexander Campbell and his wife Lucky of Lebanon, PA; two daughters, Linda Sue Campbell of Nottingham, PA and Ruby Jane Campbell of Avondale, PA; four grandchildren, Max, Melanie, Alicia and Luke Campbell; two sisters, Darthula Reynolds of Rising Sun, MD and Ida Carlon of Cockeysville, MD. He was predeceased by 10 brothers and sisters.

A service honoring his life will be held Wednesday, October 30, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at R.T. Foard Funeral Home, P.A., 111 S. Queen St., Rising Sun, MD 21911. Visitation times at the funeral home are on Tuesday evening, October 29 from 6-8 pm or one hour prior to the service on Wednesday. Burial with military honors will follow the service at Brookview Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to WVUD Fire on the Mountain Program or the Humane Society of Cecil County c/o the funeral home.
