Thomas Eugene Sankus of Newark, DE, age 71, passed away after a short illness, on Friday, December 28, 2018. He was born in Newark, NJ on June 1, 1947 to B. Mary (Hardin) Sankus and the late Albert Sankus.
Tom was a member of the IBUA (Interstate Baseball Umpire Association) for 27 years and umpired games throughout Cecil County, Maryland and New Castle County, Delaware for all ages, from little league through high school. He was an avid fan of the NY Giants and Yankees and would often enjoy talking sports with his friends at Bob Evans. He was a man that enjoyed his family and friends. Tom was proud of his recent love of working out, inspiring his grandsons to join him. His love of animals was evident, especially dogs and his beloved Kodiak. Thomas’ greatest joy was in spending time with his grandsons, Bryce and Taylor.
Tom is survived by his wife of 42 years, Patricia Sankus of Newark, DE; son, Steven Sankus and his wife, Jennifer Nolan of Newark, DE; two grandsons: Bryce and Taylor Sankus; his mother, Mary Sankus of Green Village, NJ; two brothers: Jon Sankus of Green Village, NJ; Jeffery Sankus and his companion, Fran Stanley of White House Station, NJ; sister, Lynn Sankus of Green Village, NJ; brother-in-law, Robert Day Jr. and his wife, Darlene of Barre, MA; sister-in-law, Margaret Doremus and her husband, Dale of Springfield, NJ as well as several extended family members. Tom was preceded in death by this father, Albert Sankus.
A family organized memorial service in Thomas’ honor will be held on Saturday, January 5, 2019 at 11:00 am at First Presbyterian Church at 292 W. Main St., Newark, DE.
