Thomas Edward “Ted” Davis, age 84, of Newark, DE, passed away on Monday, September 12, 2016 at Union Hospital in Elkton, MD. He was born on April 27, 1932 in Newark, DE to the late Robert B., Sr., and Mildred Ferguson Davis.
A lifelong resident of Newark, Ted proudly served his country in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955, and remained on reserves until 1961. He retired from a career in plastics technology which spanned more than 30 years at Hercules Research Center in Wilmington, DE.
Ted had a keen interest in and volunteered frequently at the Delaware Historical Society and the Pencader Heritage Area Association, to which he was also a donor of significant artifacts. Coming from a baseball family, Ted’s passion for the sport began on sand lots in Newark, continued on the varsity team at Newark High School, and on the field at Ft. Meade in the Army. His love of baseball, family, and community was on display as an avid fan and coach in Rising Sun Little League and at West Nottingham Academy. He loved to write fiction and was a bibliophile, frequenting rare and antiquarian bookstores in the Brandywine Valley.
He is survived by his sons, Jeffrey Thomas Davis, and his wife, Linda, of Doylestown, PA, and Thomas Lee Davis of Newark, DE; daughter, Linda Jean Gray, and her husband, John, of Smyrna, DE; five grandchildren, one great grandchild, and a host of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brothers, Robert Brandon Davis, Jr. and Richard Amos Davis.
A Funeral Service will be held at 7 P.M. on Thursday, September 22, 2016 at R.T. Foard Funeral Home, Inc., 122 West Main Street, Newark, DE 19711. Friends and family may visit one hour prior beginning at 6 P.M. Burial with military honors will be held at 10 A.M. on September 23, 2016 at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Bear, DE. This is a repeat of the message started and lost. I am sorry for the loss of your father and grandfather. Wish I had known Ted as an adult, he sounded so interesting. We were first cousins,he was son of the oldest Davis twin, Bob and I was daughter of youngest Davis twin, Jane. Recently I had contact with Brenda, his granddaughter who is collecting family history.
