Louise and family My condolences on Steve's passing. I did not really know Steve until he helped resurrect Common Cause Delaware in 2008-2009. When Chuck Durante and I were asked to bring Common Cause back to Delaware, and I in turn asked several politicos who would be a helpful board member, several people recommended Steve as a champion of good government and a supporter of Common Cause goals. As you know, Steve was pleased to join the board and was a major contributor to CCDE for almost a decade. I found Steve to be a most thoughtful, analytical, and knowledgeable person. He often used his political and legislative experience to provide insights and advice that greatly expanded the Board's thinking. As but one example, he explained that while same-day registration might seem attractive to the board, if it were adopted those running for office would lack knowledge of part of the electorate during the campaign. No one on the board had considered this point. I am glad that CCDE was able to recognize Steve at our 2017 awards event. He greatly deserved it. I am sorry we all will not benefit from his wisdom, helpfulness, and commitment to the community and state in the future.

A Flag for Steve

Steve Amick died on January 23rd, 2019 the same exact day as my father but five years earlier. Hearing that flags in Delaware would fly at half staff in Steve's honor this weekend reminded me of a story from January 2014.

My father was a patriotic man and flew an American flag outside his home each day. So when people asked me what they could do, I told them to fly a flag in Dad's memory on the day of his funeral, take a photo and send it to me. Of course, Steve and Louise sent a photo from their home on West Chestnut Hill Road.

Since I will not be home on the day of Steve's memorial celebration, this is a photo of a flag flying for him this week on a cold but sunny day 500 miles from Newark in Matthews, North Carolina. It's a small gesture for a man who did so much for so many. But Steve always noticed small gestures and was most grateful.

Louise and Paul...

I pray that the heartache of your loss will be replaced over time with fond heartfelt memories of your lives together. Newark is a better place because of Steve's personal contributions. He put people before politics, service above self and the good of the community above personal gain. May his gentle spirit continue to shine through your hearts. Keep the faith.

Steve was my brother in law. He was a great man. He was always willing to help anyone this shows thru his years as a lawyer, state representative & state senator. Mostly importantly this showed in his love & devotion to his family. Steve & my sister Louise would have been married fifty years later this year. His greatest joy was his grandson August that was born a year ago. I will always treasure the many times I spent with him & my sister thru the years. Our thoughts & prayers are with Steve's family. May they find comfort in the memories they had with him.
