In Loving Memory of Samuel H. Scalzo
January 31, 1932 – July 16, 2025
Samuel H. Scalzo, 93, of Chestertown, MD, passed away peacefully on July 16, 2025. Born in Philadelphia, PA, Samuel was a lifelong musician whose passion began with the banjo and clarinet and blossomed into mastery of many instruments. He composed for his junior high graduation, was First Clarinet in his high school band, and marched in Philadelphia’s renowned Mummers Parade.
A retired logistical engineer with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Samuel was deeply committed to community music. He played with local ensembles, taught at MusicLife in Chestertown, and volunteered tirelessly to inspire young musicians across Kent and Queen Anne’s counties.
Beloved by many as “Sam, the Italian Music Man,” he was known for his joyful performances strolling along the streets of Rock Hall playing his tenor sax and one of a kind “digital horn,” as well as at Redner’s Supermarket, where his music and kindness brought smiles to all.
Samuel is survived by his companion, Sydney Bortner; son, Edward S. Scalzo (wife, Susan); daughters: Donna M. Becker (husband, Timothy) and Gina Jachimowicz (husband, David); grandchildren: Kristopher Sottnick (wife, Kara), Dillon Scalzo (wife, Maribel), Shane Becker (wife, Vanessa), Clayton Scalzo, Brittani Fahrman (husband, Michael), Miranda Scalzo, Jordan Jachimowicz, Brynne Jachimowicz, and Jane Scalzo.
In addition to his parents, Samuel is preceded in death by his wife, Jane M. Scalzo; son, Frank V. Scalzo; grandchildren: James Sottnick, and T.J. Becker.
A graveside service will be held at 11 am on Friday, July 25, 2025, at St. Rose of Lima Cemetery, 301 Lock St, Chesapeake City, MD.
