Russell Charles Rawlings, age 71, of Rising Sun, Maryland, passed away at his home on May 1, 2025. Born on June 6, 1953, and a lifelong resident of Rising Sun, Russ was the beloved son of the late Paul Freeman Rawlings and Bessie Virginia (née Hershour) Rawlings.
Russell spent his career as a skilled heavy equipment operator, proudly working on construction projects throughout Cecil County. He often said he wasn’t “working,” but rather “playing in the dirt”—a phrase that perfectly captured his love for his trade. A former member of the International Union of Operating Engineers, he was known for his dedication to the job and his no-nonsense approach to life.
Russell was not one to mince words. He was direct and honest, and you always knew where you stood with him. Despite—or perhaps because of—that quality, many described him as a good man with a big heart, someone who would do anything for anyone. He was the person you called in a time of need, whether it was rescuing his daughter during a snowstorm (more than once), teaching his stepchildren and grandchildren how to drive a tractor, or helping change a flat tire. He was steady, dependable, and deeply loyal to those he loved.
In his off time, Russell was a devoted NASCAR fan, an avid gardener, and a regular at Pennsylvania’s beloved “Mud Sales.” He found joy in simple pleasures and was happiest with his hands in the dirt or surrounded by family.
He is survived by his loving partner and best friend of many years, Tracy DiFilippo; his daughter, Erica Mills, and her husband Steven; and his cherished grandchildren: Ethan Johnson, Brooke Johnson, and Mason Mills. He is also remembered fondly by his stepdaughters, Jamie White and her husband John and their children, and Danielle Slater and her husband Billy and their child. Russell is additionally survived by his brother, Larry Rawlings.
Russell Rawlings was a man of strength, grit, and generosity. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
