Rev. James F. Murphy (Jim), age 94 of Elkton, Md passed away on Friday, January 7, 2022 at home surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Elkton, MD on October 22, 1927 to the late Margaret J. Whitlock and Captain William F. Murphy.
Jim retired from a career in banking in 1989 as Sr. Vice President at Artisan’s Savings Bank in Wilmington, DE. Always learning and wanting serve others, he completed classes with the Assembly of God denomination and received his Lay Pastor’s papers in 1964. Along with serving as a Sunday School teacher at Five Rivers Church for 64 years, he filled the pulpits of many churches throughout VA, MD, DE and PA. Prior to his education at Beacom College and the Brown University National School of Finance & Management, he served in the US Army from 1946 to 1951. He married his high school sweetheart, Betty, in 1950.
Rev. Murphy Is Survived by his two children: Timothy H. Murphy (Linda) of Raleigh, NC and Kimberly J. Dotson (Gary) of Elkton, MD; five grandchildren: Nicholas J. Murphy (Dru) of Raleigh, NC, Crystal J. Ray (Otis) of Elkton, MD, Sean T. Murphy (Noemi) of Albuquerque, NM, Gary L. Dotson II (Aubrie) of Earleville, MD and Heather L. Dotson of Elkton, MD; ten great-grandchildren: Kyla A. Dotson, Carter T. Murphy, Landon T. Murphy, Ansley N. Murphy, Kendrix J. Webster, O’Mari E. Ray, Gary L. Dotson III, Santana J. Ray, Liam G. Murphy and Jaxson D. Dotson; one great-great grandson Dakota M. Mackey.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 71 years, Betty Jean Palmer Murphy.
Services for Rev. Murphy will be held at Five Rivers Church, 290 Whitehall Rd Elkton, MD 21921 on Monday, January 10, 2022 at 11:00 am where family and friends may begin visiting at 10:00 am.
