It’s with great sadness and heavy hearts that his family announces the sudden loss of Augusto “Gus” Cordova.
Augusto “Gus” Alfonso Cordova, age 65, of Newark, DE passed away August 27, 2021. He was born on March 31, 1956 in Quito, Ecuador to Anny Cordova (Ridder) and the late Dr. Alexander Cordova.
Augusto was a loving father, grandfather, brother and dedicated son. Augusto thoroughly enjoyed the last 12 years as a companion and caregiver to his mother, Anny.
A graduate of Johns Hopkins University, Augusto started his career at the DuPont Experimental Station first as a research scientist and later as a safety engineer. He had a passion for empowerment of others and was a tireless advocate for those in need so after 25 years Augusto left DuPont to obtain a law degree from Delaware Law School and worked as an attorney at Community Legal Aid Society Inc. providing legal counsel to those facing housing crisis.
In addition to his professional accomplishments Augusto volunteered at Contact Delaware, a suicide prevention hotline, taught English as a second language and frequently volunteered at the Newark Senior Center. During his free time he continued his personal development at University of Delaware’s Lifelong Learning Institute, was a voracious reader, enjoyed computers, technology, genealogy and fishing.
In addition to his mother, Augusto Cordova is survived by his daughter, Maria Cordova; granddaughter, Angela Cordova; 9 siblings: Anny Berry, Alexandra Wyant, Monsie Mintz (Steve), Elsie Beatty (Dan), Patricia Canning (Pat), Alicia Pettit (Bob); Daniel Cordova (Deanna), Nora Rittberg (Alex), and Eric Cordova (Cheri), numerous nieces and nephews and Beverly Cordova, his former wife and lifelong friend.
A celebration of life for Augusto Cordova will be held at 12:00 p.m. Monday, September 20, 2021 at R.T. Foard & Jones Funeral Home, 122 West Main Street, Newark, DE 19711. Family and friends may begin visiting on Monday at 10:30 a.m. A virtual option will be made available. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made payable to “Community Legal Aid Society, Inc.” and sent in care of the funeral home.
