It’s with great sadness and heavy hearts that his family announces the sudden loss of Augusto “Gus” Cordova.

Augusto “Gus” Alfonso Cordova, age 65, of Newark, DE passed away August 27, 2021. He was born on March 31, 1956 in Quito, Ecuador to Anny Cordova (Ridder) and the late Dr. Alexander Cordova.

Augusto was a loving father, grandfather, brother and dedicated son. Augusto thoroughly enjoyed the last 12 years as a companion and caregiver to his mother, Anny.

A graduate of Johns Hopkins University, Augusto started his career at the DuPont Experimental Station first as a research scientist and later as a safety engineer. He had a passion for empowerment of others and was a tireless advocate for those in need so after 25 years Augusto left DuPont to obtain a law degree from Delaware Law School and worked as an attorney at Community Legal Aid Society Inc. providing legal counsel to those facing housing crisis.

In addition to his professional accomplishments Augusto volunteered at Contact Delaware, a suicide prevention hotline, taught English as a second language and frequently volunteered at the Newark Senior Center. During his free time he continued his personal development at University of Delaware’s Lifelong Learning Institute, was a voracious reader, enjoyed computers, technology, genealogy and fishing.

In addition to his mother, Augusto Cordova is survived by his daughter, Maria Cordova; granddaughter, Angela Cordova; 9 siblings: Anny Berry, Alexandra Wyant, Monsie Mintz (Steve), Elsie Beatty (Dan), Patricia Canning (Pat), Alicia Pettit (Bob); Daniel Cordova (Deanna), Nora Rittberg (Alex), and Eric Cordova (Cheri), numerous nieces and nephews and Beverly Cordova, his former wife and lifelong friend.

A celebration of life for Augusto Cordova will be held at 12:00 p.m. Monday, September 20, 2021 at R.T. Foard & Jones Funeral Home, 122 West Main Street, Newark, DE 19711. Family and friends may begin visiting on Monday at 10:30 a.m. A virtual option will be made available. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made payable to “Community Legal Aid Society, Inc.” and sent in care of the funeral home.

My condolences to the entire Cordova family. Augusto was one of the kindest and gentlest people I have ever known. We need more people like him in our lives and world.

To my childhood friends & neighbors, The Cordova family, I’m very sorry to hear of Augusto’s passing. The Richitellis and the Cordovas lived just a couple houses away from each other, and Augusto and I spent quite a bit of time at each other’s houses. We were good friends as kids. I read his obituary and I can’t help but think that God would be pleased with his life. Augusto was a good and gentle soul. If only the world had more like him. May God bless you all. Eddy

It is with great sadness that I express my condolences to Mrs. Anny Cordova and family. Though I didn’t know him well, Augusto was obviously a graceful, lovely, and generous soul. I am shocked and saddened to hear of Gus's passing. He was an amazingly caring and gentle man, who took great pride in his family and loved caring for his mom, whom I also have the pleasure of knowing. Sending prayers for peace and strength to the whole Cordova family. He will be missed.

Dear Alec and Everyone in the Cordova family, I am so sorry for your loss. Augusto and all of your family are in my thoughts and prayers. May he rest in peace.

I am so saddened to hear this. I was a colleague of Gus's at CLASI I first met Gus when he was a student of mine—and a stellar one at that. I was co-teaching a Disability Law class at Delaware Law School, and Gus was the one student older than both us professors. Gus was in the evening program at the Law School—he was pursuing the law degree while simultaneously working full-time at DuPont. Gus was hard working, extremely bright, and thoroughly prepared. In fact, I was a little worried that he would be asking questions to which I did not know the answer. Indeed my fears proved true—he brought insights and perspectives to the cases that I had not before considered. I remember thinking that Gus would make a great legal aid lawyer, and as it turns out, Gus thought so too. Gus started as a student intern at CLASI while still in law school, and then we hired him when a staff attorney position opened up. Gus worked in the housing and family units in Wilmington for eleven years until he retired young in 2016. I will remember Gus as a good colleague- he developed and maintained the housing case database for us--a gentle soul, and an earnest, hard working colleague. Gus treated everyone with kindness and respect, and I will remember him warmly and fondly. I am sending peace and love to his family.

You will be deeply missed, Uncle Augusto. Thank you for inspiring us every day.
