Michael “Barry” Gorrell (65) of Rising Sun, Maryland, passed away peacefully on February 11, 2026. Born in Havre de Grace, Maryland on September 29, 1960, he was the cherished son of Anita (née Hawley) Gorrell and the late Richard Gorrell, and the devoted husband of Theresa (née Powers) Gorrell.
Barry proudly served his country in the United States Air Force for four years, stationed at Minot Air Force Base in North Dakota. He continued his military service for two additional years with the Maryland Air National Guard. Following his time in the service, Barry began a career as an over-the-road truck driver, traveling across the country and becoming well known for his uncanny sense of direction and natural ability to navigate wherever the road led him. Later, he worked for IKEA in their warehouse as an internal hauler, where his strong work ethic and reliability were appreciated by all who worked alongside him.
Barry found true peace in the outdoors. In his younger years, he enjoyed tent camping, and later he treasured time spent at his cabin in Romney, West Virginia, where many cherished family memories were made. He loved birdwatching at the Conowingo Dam and along the Potomac River and was rarely seen without his binoculars in hand. Barry also enjoyed traveling and cruising, especially to destinations such as Mexico and the Bahamas.
An avid Baltimore sports fan, Barry faithfully cheered on the Orioles and the Ravens, celebrating their victories and standing by them through every season.
A devoted animal lover, he cared for many cats throughout his life and held a special fondness for his beloved cat, Lilly.
To his family, Barry will be remembered as a soft-spoken, laid-back man with a generous heart. He would go out of his way to help family and friends, always offering quiet support and steady guidance. His kindness, loyalty, and gentle spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
In addition to his father, Barry was preceded in death by his sister-in-law, Terri Gorrell.
He is survived by his loving wife, Theresa Gorrell; his children, Joseph Austin Gorrell and his wife Allison, and Craig Adam Gorrell; his mother, Anita Gorrell; his siblings, Mr. & Mrs. Wayne Gorrell, Mr. & Mrs. Mark Witkowski and Kris Gorrell; along with a multitude of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
A visitation will be held on Friday, February 20, 2024, from 6:00 Pm to 8:00 PM at R. T. Foard Funeral Home – 111 South Queen Street Rising Sun, Maryland. A service will be held on Saturday, February 21, 2026, at the Funeral Home at 1:00 PM with a visitation beginning at 12:00 PM. Burial will be in New Bridge Cemetery.
