Mary Patricia “Pat” Long, age 87, of Wilmington, DE passed away on Monday, November 21, 2016 after a long illness. She was born on April 3, 1929 in Wilmington, DE to the late Edward Reardon and Cecilia (McCullough) Reardon.
Pat graduated from Ursuline Academy in Wilmington, DE in 1947. She attended Notre Dame University in Baltimore, MD for one year before going to work at Hercules Research Center as a Chemist Assistant. At Hercules she met her future husband, Paul Francis Long, and they were married on November 15, 1952.
Pat and Paul lived 58 of their happy 63 year marriage at their home on Wiltshire Road in Claymont, DE. She was a devoted homemaker and housewife, and was the primary caregiver for many years to their eldest son, Michael, until the end of his life. Later, Pat worked as a teacher’s aide at a preschool in Claymont for 19 years. Pat was happiest when she was humbly and compassionately helping family and friends at every opportunity. She was a member of the Holy Rosary Parish.
Pat is survived by daughter, Sheila Basarab and husband, Gregory, of Boston, MA; son, Timothy Long and wife, Martha, of Portland, OR; grandson, Brett Basarab of Boulder, CO; sister, Cecilia Becchi of Swedesboro, NJ and her children Lisa Smith, Theresa Odoriso, Maureen Field and Eileen Condefer. In addition to her parents, Pat was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Paul Francis Long, and son, Michael Paul Long.
Memorial services for Pat will be held at 11AM on Saturday, March 11, 2017 at R.T. Foard & Jones Funeral Home, 122 W. Main St., Newark, DE 19711. friends and family may visit one hour prior beginning at 10AM. Inurnment will follow at Cathedral Cemetery in Wilmington, DE. Memorial contributions can be made in Pat’s honor, payable to “Compassionate Care Hospice” and send in care of the funeral home.
