Julian Wallace Rittenhouse, age 87, of Newark, DE passed away on Tuesday, February 2, 2016 surrounded by his family. Born on April 15, 1928 in Newark, Delaware, he was the son of Cyrus Ephram and Miriam Boys Rittenhouse.
After graduating from Mercersburg Academy in Mercersburg, PA in 1946, he majored in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Delaware in the class of 1950, and he was a founding member of Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity. From 1951 until 1953, he served as an ordnance specialist in the US Army at White Sands Proving Ground in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Following the untimely death of his father, Julian assumed joint leadership of Rittenhouse Motor Company with his brother Cyrus Donald and his late brother-in-law Robert H. Dutton. The family automobile dealership was in operation from 1923 until 1996. From its original location on South College Avenue, the business expanded to Academy Street in 1941 and to Elkton Road in 1963. He was also a member of Newark Optimist Club, City of Newark Planning Commission, Newark Historical Society, Boy Scouts of America, Delaware Automobile and Truck Dealers Association, and a lifelong member of Newark United Methodist Church.
Julian is survived by Elizabeth Starn Rittenhouse, his wife of 64 years, son Steven James Rittenhouse of Roanoke, Virginia, daughter Susan Rittenhouse Weiler and her husband William George Weiler, Jr of Middletown, Maryland, grandson Brian Kenneth Weiler and his wife Courtney Pace Weiler of Nashville, Tennessee, granddaughter Elizabeth Ann Weiler and her husband David Edward Cox of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, grandson Jonathan William Weiler and his wife Laura Hamlin Weiler of Richmond, Virginia, 7 great-grandchildren, and brother Cyrus Donald Rittenhouse.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Marjorie Rittenhouse Dutton.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, February 13, 2016 at 2:00 pm at Newark United Methodist Church, 69 East Main Street, Newark, Delaware. Contributions can be made to Newark United Methodist Church.

An additional story about our friend Jude Rittenhouse.
Every Friday evening the garage at Rittenhouse Motors was swept from front to back by a man named Ralph Broadwater. One particular summer Friday I drove by and spotted my friend and co-worker Mark Lindell washing his car while Ralph and his 2 children swept the shop. As I chatted with Mark and Ralph we noticed how filthy the kid were from climbing under the work benches to clean. After some brief banter we all got into a water fight back in the wash bays. Being a warm summer evening it was good clean fun until Jude happened to stop by after an evening out with his wife. He rolled down the window and yelled at us to quit screwing around and a few other admonishments. We thought we were in trouble until we saw him flash that big warm smile and laugh rolling up the window and driving away. The man had a heart of gold. Fun loving and generous. I often wondered if he hadn't been dressed up in nice clothes out for the evening would he pick up a hose and join in the fun?
My guess is yes.
