John “Captain” Joseph McAtee of Newark, DE, age 65, passed away on Friday, April 16, 2021. John was born on July 7, 1955 in Philadelphia, PA to the late Thomas Joseph McAtee and Margaret Rose (Potenburg) McAtee.
John was an extremely hard worker and was incredibly proud of the years he spent as a crane operator. He was happiest on the water, either fishing on his boat the “Mac Attack” or crabbing with his brother Tommy. He was a very dependable guy and the ultimate friend. Of all of the things he was proud of, he was most proud of his children and grandchildren. He loved having weekly pizza nights and sneaking money to his grandchildren for ice cream.
John is survived by his children: Ashley Copenhaver (Brian), Phillip McAtee (Loretta), Amy McAtee (Anthony West); their Mother and longtime friend Judith Poore; grandchildren: Summer, Alexis, Eli, Marilyn, Carling, Daisy; siblings: Thomas McAtee, Michael McAtee, Elizabeth McAtee, Timothy McAtee, Patrick McAtee (Charlotte); nephews: Nicholas, Hunter; and niece, Megan. In addition to his parents, John is preceded in death by his sister, Margaret Fulton; nephew, Gregory Fulton and beloved companion, Big Dog.
A celebration of John’s life will be held on Friday, April 23, 2021 at 7:00 p.m. at R.T. Foard & Jones Funeral Home, 122 W. Main Street, Newark, DE 19711, where family and friends may start visiting at 6:00 p.m. Casual attire is encouraged. Burial will be held privately at Kemblesville Cemetery.
