Jeanne Marie Menge

Jeanne Marie “Jeannie” (Boas) Menge, 93, of Conowingo, formerly of Strasburg, PA went to her heavenly home on January 6, 2021 at Calvert Manor Center for Rehabilitation and Healthcare, Rising Sun, MD.

Jeannie was born on July 24, 1927 in Lancaster, PA to the late Harry Michael and Thelma May (Sterling) Boas. She was a 1945 graduate of Penn Manor High School in Millersville, PA. On September 11, 1948 Jeanne married Daniel W. “Pete” Menge in Lancaster, PA. Dan preceded her in death on June 3, 1993. She worked as a Seamstress and an Assistant Store Manager and enjoyed being a homemaker and taking care of her husband and daughters.

As a child, Jeannie loved to sing and dance and was known as the “Shirley Temple of Lancaster County”. She was a kind and caring woman who was always willing to lend a hand. In her younger adult years, she volunteered for a local organization who helped grocery shop and run errands for people who could not do it themselves. More recently, she would crochet hats for newborns in the hospital as well as for senior citizens. She enjoyed cooking, crocheting, sewing, gardening, genealogy, and reading the Bible. She also collected porcelain dolls and perfume bottles. She loved animals, and was known to feed and adopt feral neighborhood cats. She really loved her cats. Jeanne would hold annual Christmas parties for the family and was well known for the homemade candy she would make at Christmas and Easter. One thing everyone could always count on when visiting Jeannie was the jar of hard candy on her kitchen counter.

Jeanne was the best mother and grandmother. She had a box full of costume jewelry that she always allowed her grandchildren to play with. She loved birdwatching and passed that love on to her grandchildren who could not wait to go to Grandma’s to look out the window and name the birds at the birdfeeder. Jeanne cherished time spent with her daughters and grandchildren.

A believer in Jesus Christ Jeanne accepted the lord as her savior at an early age and was baptized at Wrights Dale Baptist Church where she was a faithful member. She took great joy in blessing the parishioners of the church with birthday, anniversary, and get-well cards. Throughout her life Jeanne held an unwavering faith in God, which she shared with those who surrounded her.

Jeanne is survived by her daughter, Karyl (Allen) Louthian, Sr. of Conowingo, MD; 7 grandchildren, Lester L. (Britta) Louthian of Joppa, Md, Kimberly L. (Andrew) Smith of Kent Island Estates, MD, Jennifer M. (Michael) Johnson of West Lafayette, IN, Allen L. (Annemarie) Louthian II of North East, MD, Andrew B. (Wendy) Louthian Sr. of Havre De Grace, MD, Jodi L. (Eric) Stapler of Lancaster, PA, and Jami L. Harris of Elizabethtown, PA; 21 great-grandchildren, Sarah (Mathew) Cramblett, Gabrielle Sorenson, Justin (Brianna Gosnell) Raber, Rachel Smith, Brady Smith, KateLynn Carter, Alyssa Louthian, Julia Kilgore, Andrew Louthian II, Emma (Dan Good) Sundy, Alexis (Drew) Macho, Jordan (Kate Vandiver) Monroe, Alexander Stapler, Natalie Harris, Zachary Stapler, Jaedan Johnson, Logan Harris, Isaac Stapler, Noah Johnson, Kenley Stapler, and Reese Johnson; 7 great-great grandchildren, William “Frankie”, Nickole, and Rollins Cramblett, Lucy and Elliot Muaio, Daniel “Archer” Good, and Wyatt Monroe; 2 sisters, Stephanie (Thomas) Newswanger and Janice Gerhart; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Along with her husband, Dan and her parents, Harry and Thelma, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Kathryn M. Viers; a grandson, Kevin Allen Louthian; and sister, Karen M. Howett.

Due to covid-19 restrictions the burial service will be held privately on March 19, 2021. The family of Jeanne Menge invite all to join together to honor and celebrate her life Sat. March 20th @ 1pm at Wrights Dale Baptist Church, 310 Little Britain Road, South Peach Bottom, PA 17563 on March 20, 2021. Jeanne will be laid to rest beside her husband and grandson at Marietta Cemetery, Marietta, PA.
