Claire Herbener Rizzo, age 96 of Newark, DE passed away on October 2, 2025. She was born on September 30, 1929 in Newark, DE to the late Harry Herbener and Helen (Miller) Herbener.

Claire was a kind, loving, and generous woman. She loved to get together with her friends and visit Newark Senior Center where she enjoyed swimming. Claire was a football and baseball fanatic and cheered on her beloved Philadelphia Eagles. She also enjoyed attending University of Delaware games to cheer on the Blue Hens! Claire found enjoyment while watching game shows such as Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy.

Claire is survived by her grandson, Anthony Rizzo, III; great grandson, Anthony Rizzo, IV; and sister, Leila Herbener.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Anthony Rizzo, Sr. and son, Anthony Rizzo, Jr.

A graveside service for Claire will be held on Saturday, October 11, 2025 at 10:30AM at Pencader Cemetery, 2315 Glasgow Avenue, Newark, DE 19702. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to “American Cancer Society” and sent in care of R.T. Foard Funeral Home, P.A., 259 East Main Street, Elkton, MD 21921.

During the storm of 1962 when I was 18 months old Claire and Tony Sr babysat me for a few days while my parents cleaned from the flood at our cottage. The story goes that I was like a monkey hanging from the bunk beds, climbing on the dining room table. I exhausted them. They still loved me anyway, lol! And I love Claire, she was a compassionate and kind friend to all. Love and prayers, Ellie
