Charles “Charley” Ross Witmer III of Newark, DE passed away Friday, February 22, 2019. He was born June 28, 1938 in Lancaster, PA to the late Charles Ross Witmer, Jr. and Dorothy (Schied) Witmer.
Charley worked for Chrysler for 41 years until his retirement in 2002. He was a lifetime member of the Newark VFW Post 475, a longtime member of the Elkton Moose Lodge 851 and volunteered for 15 years with Meals-on-Wheels, delivering meals. Charley enjoyed playing pool, bowling, visiting casinos and meeting up with friends once a month. He traveled extensively in the United States. Charley was a giving man and will be fondly remembered for his creative repair efforts.
Charley is survived by his three sons: Steven Witmer, David Witmer and his wife, Marti, and Craig Witmer and his companion, Carla; 11 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; companion, Reta Hellman; sister, Deb Witmer and daughter-in-law Karen Witmer; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members.
In addition to his parents, Charley is preceded in death by his wife, Harriet Witmer; two sons: Robert “Bob” Witmer and Charles “Buddy” Witmer, IV; and granddaughter, Jennifer Witmer.
A celebration of Charley’s life will be held at 12:30pm on Tuesday, March 5, 2019 at R.T. Foard & Jones Funeral Home, 122 W. Main St., Newark, DE 19711. Family and friends may begin visiting at 10:30am. Burial will follow at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made payable to “VFW Post 475” and sent in care of the funeral home.
