Carole Shew, beloved wife of Jacob Franklin Shew, passed away peacefully on Tuesday September 4, 2018. Carole was born on December 25, 1940, in Gary, West Virginia where she spent her childhood. She was the eldest child of Lawrence and Avis Christian.
Carole was the first in her family to attend college, earning a full scholarship to Marshall University. She graduated in 1958 with a degree in Elementary Education. After college, she taught for 4 years in Barbersville, West Virginia. During that time, Carole spent a summer in Newark, Delaware where she met her loving and dedicated husband, Jacob Shew. They married in June 1966.
Carole enjoyed her career as an elementary school teacher for the Christina School District where she inspired thousands of children and had a special gift for teaching them how to read. Her love of education, reading, and scholarship greatly influenced the lives and careers of her own children, one of whom became a teacher, one an academic, and the third a therapist.
Carole was a woman of great faith and an active member of the Newark Church of the Nazarene for over 40 years. Her compassion and kindness nourished many friendships and provided great comfort to family and dear friends. Carole was a strong believer in charity and devoted much of her time to social causes.
A cherished wife and mother, Carole is survived by her husband of 52 years, Jacob Shew and three daughters: Lori Shew Jones of Wilmington, DE; Amy and her husband, Christopher Moseder of Wilmington, DE; and Abby Shew of Wilmington, DE. She was overjoyed and delighted to be a grandmother to Christian Jacob Moseder. Carole was preceded in death by her parents, Lawrence and Avis Christian, her sister, Sharon McGee, and her brother, Samuel Lawrence Christian.
A celebration of Carole’s life will be held at 12pm on Monday, September 10, 2018 at R.T. Foard & Jones Funeral Home, 122 W. Main St., Newark, DE 19711 where family and friends may begin visiting at 10am. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Carole’s memory may be made to the American Heart Association and sent in care of the funeral home.
