Betty Marie Stuart passed away peacefully at the Senator Bob Hooper House on August 14,
2025, surrounded by her family.
Betty was born on April 15, 1929, in Elkton, MD, to Jesse and Clara Lawson. She was raised
in Rising Sun and attended school there, eventually meeting her beloved husband, Raymond
Stuart. They married and had four daughters.
Betty was a strong matriarch of her family and an incredibly loving daughter, sister, aunt,
mother, mom mom and ole’ mama. She celebrated her four girls and adored her grandchildren
and the special connection she had with each. She had an amazing sense of humor and
enjoyed making people laugh, which made her favorite holidays, Halloween and Christmas,
extra special and fun. She also enjoyed spending time with family picking crabs and eating ice
cream. In recent years, she enjoyed activities and all of the friendships made at Citizens Care.
She was a devout Christian with a strong faith in God. She loved listening to gospel music and
singing her favorite hymns. She was a devoted and hardworking woman who poured her heart
into everything she did-whether helping run her family’s business, Sun Cleaners, working on the
production line at Bud Company, or, most importantly, caring for her family as a loving wife,
mother, and caregiver.
She was a beautiful woman with a radiant soul, whose kindness touched countless lives and
whose warmth filled many hearts. Blessed with 96 remarkable years, she leaves behind a
legacy of love and will be profoundly missed.
Betty is survived by daughters Marlene Townsend (Will), Raylene Crosse (Buck), and Lisa
McCartan, son-in-law Samuel VanCulin, eleven grandchildren, Rick, Lee, Scott, Will, Fred,
Jason, Amy, Jeff, Brittany, Hannah and Jena, 22 great grandchildren, and one great great
grandson. She is predeceased by her parents Jesse and Clara, husband Raymond Stuart,
siblings Hobart Jr., Juanita, Zora, Kathleen, Edna, James, Sonny, and Peggy, and daughter
Sharon VanCulin.
A memorial service will be held at 11am on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, at R.T. Foard Funeral
