Suzanne “Sue” S. Chantler of Elkton, MD, age 96, passed away Wednesday, April 6, 2022. She was born in Laporte, PA on October 29, 1925 to the late Victor R. Smyth and Mary (Braumbaugh) Smyth.
Sue received her BA in Education from Mansfield State Teachers College in 1947. She taught for several years prior to having children and then afterwards as a substitute. Sue was a lifetime member of the First Presbyterian Church in Newark, DE and had been a member at the Newark Senior Center. An active person, she kept up on her physical fitness throughout her life. Sue and her husband enjoyed gardening together, golfing as members of DuPont and Newark Country Clubs and traveling in the United States. A people person, she made friends easily and liked to interact with people. One of her favorite pastimes was sitting on her front porch swing, admiring her blooming geraniums, and welcoming neighbors with a wave and an invitation to join her. She always complimented your new hairstyle and the outfits you wore. Sue was well loved by those that knew her. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family, to whom she was devoted.
Sue is survived by two sons: Paul Chantler (Grace Vinci) and Steve Chantler (Robin Philipbar); five grandchildren: Nicholas C. Chantler (Jamie), Erin R. Chantler, Alexander W. Chantler (Lucy), Benjamin P. Chantler and Leah Huf (Myles); five great-grandchildren: Madeline Chantler, Ethan Chantler, Owen Paglinawan, June Huf and Henry Huf; and nephew, Sterling Smyth (Tish).
In addition to her parents, Sue was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Kenneth A. Chantler; brother, John R. Smyth; and sister, Louise Smyth.
A memorial celebration of Sue’s life, open to all family and friends, will be held at 11am on Saturday, April 23, 2022 at the First Presbyterian Church, 292 W. Main St., Newark, DE 19711, Burial will be held privately.
