Susan P. Shaffer, age 64 of Newark, DE passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 16, 2017 at St. Francis Compassionate Care Hospice. She was born on July 28, 1953 in Wilmington, DE to the late John H. Peck and Mary E. (Clancy) Peck.

Susan was a very active and outgoing person. In her early years, she participated in sports such as basketball and cheerleading and had the privilege of traveling to many different countries with her family. She graduated from University of Delaware with a degree in Communications and later worked as an Insurance Claims Adjuster for many firms throughout her life. Susan enjoyed vacationing and boating on the waters of Deep Creek Lake and Smith Mountain Lake. She loved to garden, paint with water color, but she especially cherished those moments spent with her husband, son, and dog, BoBo. Susan will be remembered most as a devoted wife and loving mother.

Susan is survived by her husband, Melvin Shaffer, “Bud” of 31 ½ years of Newark, DE; son, Jeffrey Shaffer and his girlfriend, Danielle of Newark, DE; sisters: Maura Perkins (Eric) of Fair Hill, MD, Aileen Whitaker (Mark) of Virginia Beach, VA, and Elizabeth Lewis (Gilby) of Delaware City, DE; and six nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the caretakers at St. Francis Compassionate Care Hospice for their professional and kind hearted service.

A celebration of Susan’s life will be held on Tuesday, August 22, 2017 at 12:00pm at R.T. Foard & Jones, Inc., 122 West Main Street, Newark, DE 19711 with a visitation beginning at 11:00am. Burial will be held at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made payable to, “St. Francis Compassionate Care” and sent in care of the funeral home.
