Ruth Evelyn Hurst, a lifelong resident of Delaware, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family on Thursday, February 13, 2025, at the age of 90. She was born on September 27, 1934, in Wilmington, DE to the late Paul R. Brown, and Linda Mae (Carter) Brown.
Ruth was the epitome of “Super Woman” she lived her life entirely for others with selfless love, affection and understanding for all. Everyone that met her fell in love with her and affectionately called her mom, mom-mom, little mom-mom, or Ms. Ruth.
Ruth drove a school bus for 30 plus years and in that time had many adoptive children, and grandchildren that gravitated to her loving personality and kindness. Ruth loved cooking and spending time with her family and friends. Her food was amazing, and everyone would ask “did Ruth make it”. Ruth’s passion was her family especially her children and grandchildren. Ruth’s laughter and smile will forever be a reminder of her strong spirit and faith.
Ruth is survived by her daughters: Evelyn Owens (Greg), Nancy Gant (Edward); daughter-in-law, Arlene Eager; grandchildren: Jeremy Baeder (Jeanie), Crystal Baeder, Christopher Baeder, Thomas Smith (Julie), Susan Smith (Tosh), Amber Shire, Angelica Sweetman, Jeffrey Sweetman (Kalyn), Tiffany Billingsley (Alan), Carol Ross, Kimberly Hentkowski (John), Chris Gant and Greg Gant; great grandchildren: Nathan Baeder (Kayla), Anthany Baeder, Alanna Sanders, Mariah Baeder, Vinny Baeder, Alivia Mealy, Cayson Kellam, Bentley Smith, Sophia Billingsley, Connor Sullivan, Amara Blake, James Blake, Camden Shire, Legna Ward, Aubri King, Leon Sweetman, Kaylyn Gant, Chandler Ross, Samantha DeGeorge, Dante Gant, Keanu Gant, and Gabriel Gant; great great grandchildren: Xylas Sanders, Savannah DeGeorge, and Connor DeGeorge; brother, James Brown (Evon); sister-in-law, Wanda Scrafford; brother-in-law, James Hall; lots of nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Ruth is preceded in death by her husband, Franklin Hurst; daughters: Ruth Gandy, and Virginia Hurst; sons: Thomas Dorsey, and David Eager; sisters: Florence Hall, and Shirley Lafrancis; brothers: Hersh Brown, Raymond Brown and Earl Brown.
A celebration of Ruth’s life will be held at 7:00 PM on Thursday, February 20, 2025, at R.T. Foard & Jones, Inc., 122 West Main Street, Newark, DE where family and friends may begin visiting at 6:00 PM. A burial will be held on Saturday, February 22, 2025, at 2:00 PM at Newark Cemetery.
