Raymond J. Gilboyne, age 69, flew west to his final destination on a sunny morning, February 22, 2012, in the comfort of his home and his wife after a courageous battle with Merkle Cell Carcinoma.
He attended Ventnor, NJ schools and graduated from Atlantic City High School in 1961. He attended Penn State University and in 1962, joined the U.S. Marine Corps. He served as an air traffic controller and radio operator with service in California, Japan and in 1965, Chu Lai, Vietnam. After an honorable discharge, he attended Burnside Ott Flight Academy and continued with multi engine flight training. He was hired by United Airlines in 1967. He was then employed by Del Air/Summit Airlines for 19 years as a Captain. Following his time at Summit, he was employed by Evergreen Airlines and ultimately employed by United Airlines and retired in 2002 as Captain on the Airbus 360.
Raymond enjoyed boating, reading, the North East River and the good company of friends and family.
He was preceded by his parents, Raymond, Sr. and Mary Conway Gilboyne. He is survived by his wife, Margaret (Peggy) Dobbins Gilboyne; daughter, Kelly Rasero; and son in law, Lawrence of Kennett Square, PA. He is also survived by his beautiful grandchildren, Emma Rasero and Noah Rasero; and his beloved dog, Darby.
He is additionally survived by his sister, Karen Gilboyne and brother in law, Randy Nonenmacher; niece, Catherine Nonenmacher; as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family. He will be missed by his boating buddies, airline friends and many people who touched his life and have been touch by him.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 am on March 31, 2012 in St. Judes Roman Catholic Church in North East, MD. In keeping with his Irish heritage, a wake service will be held at home. .
