Ralph Welton “Tuie” Barrow, Jr. of Newark, DE, age 89, passed away Tuesday, June 15, 2021. Ralph was born on June 13, 1932 in Newark, DE to the late Ralph Welton Barrow, Sr. and Edna Crowe Barrow.
Ralph was a lifetime resident of Newark, graduating from Newark High School and then the University of Delaware, where he met his wife Penny.
As an ROTC student, upon graduation, Ralph entered and served in the Army for 2 years including a year in Germany. He was discharged with a rank of 1st Lieutenant, later earning the rank of Captain in the reserves.
Ralph worked for several financial institutions where he specialized in consumer and business loans. Later he was President of Jobs for Delaware Graduates and served on the Board of Jobs for American Graduates.
An avid outdoorsman, Ralph spent summers fishing for flounder and crabbing and spent each fall hunting doves and the winter season hunting quail with his many bird dogs. Ralph was also an accomplished trapshooter and a life member of the Wilmington Trapshooting Association.
In retirement Ralph spent time playing golf, boating, fishing and crabbing. He and his family spent many weekends at the beach, first in Fenwick Island and then at Quillen’s Point in Ocean View Delaware, which became his primary residence in the summer. As “Double Dels”, he and his wife Penny, were Diamond Club supporters of the University of Delaware Athletic programs. They spent many Saturdays tailgating and watching Delaware Football as well as many years as season ticket holders for the Basketball programs.
Ralph was a member of Newark Country Club for over 50 years, a life member of the VFW, post 475, but also enjoyed many friends at VFW post 7234 in Ocean View. Ralph was also a member of Mason Hiram Lodge #25 in Newark for over 60 years. He was also a longtime member of the University touchdown club and the Newark Historical Society.
Ralph is survived by his daughter, Debbie Corrado (Steven); son, Bill Barrow (Linda); daughter, Barbara Thompson (Bob); son, Rob Barrow; 5 grandchildren: Lindsey Prater (Todd), Michael Barrow (Tara), Brian Barrow, Evan Barrow, Reid Barrow; 2 great grandchildren: Eloise Barrow and Rylee Prater. In addition to his parents, Ralph is preceded in death by his wife, Anna Lee “Penny” Barrow.
A celebration of Ralph’s life will be held on Thursday, July 1, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at R.T. Foard & Jones Funeral Home, 122 W. Main Street, Newark, DE 19711, where family and friends may start visiting at 10:00 a.m. Burial will be held privately and at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to “Alzheimer’s Assn.” and sent in care of the funeral home.
