Paul David Elwood, age 72, of Rising Sun, MD passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 19, 2018. Born November 16, 1945 in Wilmington, DE, Paul was the son of the late David Leroy Elwood, Jr. and the late Rita Ann (Kelly) Elwood.
Paul served his country proudly in the United States Army. He graduated in June 1967 from the Officer Candidate School in Ft. Benning, GA. Paul served as Second Lieutenant while stationed at Ft. Hood, TX. He was promoted to First Lieutenant while serving on Advisory Team # 82 Military Assistance Command Vietnam (MACV). During Paul’s service in Vietnam he earned several medals including the Bronze Star and the Combat Infantryman Badge. After Vietnam, Paul returned to the United States where he was promoted to Captain and continued to serve at Ft. Holabird, MD working in the Intelligence School.
Paul was very active in his community where he was involved in many organizations. He was a parishioner of Saint Agnes Roman Catholic Church and was a Eucharistic Minister who provided communion for residents of Calvert Manor Nursing Home. He was a member of lota Lambda Sigma Honor Society – an honorary professional society in Workforce Development. He was also a member of the Kiwanis International, the Key Club for Elkton High School, current president of CASA of Cecil County. Paul was particularly proud of his membership with the Lions Club International where he served as a past president and was most recently awarded the Melvin Jones Fellow Award. He also participated in Christmas in July and was an honorary member of the Blue Knights Motorcycle Club.
Paul attended Millersville University where he obtained his Bachelor of Science in Education in May 1978. He later obtained his Masters of Education in May 1996 from Loyola College. Paul worked as a teacher for the Cecil County Public Schools where he retired as a school administrator. In his spare time, Paul enjoyed woodworking, fishing, skeet shooting, traveling, reading and computers. His greatest joy however, was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
Paul is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Linda Elwood of Rising Sun, MD; son, David Elwood and his wife, Victoria “Dee” of Lewes, DE; daughter, Erin Elwood Calhoun and her husband, Todd of Rising Sun, MD; four grandchildren: Macey Jones, Caleb Campbell, Madison Elwood and Mason Calhoun; aunt, Mary Ann Permar of Wilmington, DE and numerous extended family members.
A visitation will be held from 6pm to 8pm on Wednesday, September 26, 2018 at R.T. Foard Funeral Home, P.A., 111 S. Queen St., Rising Sun, MD 21911. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12pm on Thursday, September 27, 2018 at St. Agnes Roman Catholic Church, 150 S. Queen St., Rising Sun, MD 21911, where family and friends may visit beginning at 11am. Burial will follow at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery at 2pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made payable to “Leukemia Lymphoma Society” or to “St. Agnes Roman Catholic Church” and sent in care of the funeral home, P.O. Box 248, Rising Sun, MD 21911.
