Patricia Shelton Mooney, 90, of Wilmington, Delaware, passed away surrounded by her loving family, at Christiana Hospital, after a brief illness. She was the widow of Edgar Herbert Shelton, Jr., and Francis T. Mooney. Born on October 11, 1923, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of the late Edward C. and Ruth Hartz Bunn. She was a faithful member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church.
Pat was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a stay-at-home mom to her eight children, and after the death of her first husband “Herb” in 1964, she completed undergraduate and graduate degrees at the University of Delaware and worked the next twenty years as a dedicated teacher for learning disabled students in North East, Maryland. Family was her passion, and she spent many years helping with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was so proud of all of them, and traveled around the country to attend their school and sporting events, graduations and weddings. She was also known for her work with several charities, most notably Hope Dining Room, where it became a Shelton family tradition for many years to serve Christmas dinner for less fortunate families in the area.
In December of 1990, she married a high school friend, “Frank”, after a whirlwind courtship. They were the hit of their P. S. DuPont 50th High School reunion a short time later. She recently lost Frank to illness in July, 2014.
Pat is survived by her children, France (Jelka) Shelton, Chuck (Dorothy) Shelton, Barbara (Chip) Moody, Terry (Ted) Hasson, Laura Shelton, Linda Brechtel, Chris (Cindy) Shelton, and Paula (Jeff) Rems, her stepchildren Tim (Brenda) Mooney and Susan Mooney. She was blessed with twenty-five grandchildren and thirty-eight great-grandchildren, who live in Delaware, New Jersey, Maryland, Virginia, Tennessee, South Carolina, Alabama, Florida, Texas, California, and Ecuador.
A Celebration of Pat’s life and faith will be held on Saturday, September 27, 2014 at 10 AM at Ebenezer United Methodist Church, 525 Polly Drummond Hill Road, Newark, Delaware, 19711.
