Hazel E. Shutt, age 85, of Elkton, Maryland, passed away on July 2, 2025. Born on July 4, 1939, in Suedburg, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of the late Levi and Margaret (Shive) Schaeffer and the beloved wife of the late Preston Shutt, Sr., who passed away in 2015.
Hazel and Preston were high school sweethearts spending nearly 60 years together building a life rooted in love, family, and faith. Hazel took great pride in caring for her home and was known for her talent in sewing, gardening, and baking—especially her beautifully crafted wedding cakes. She loved creating lasting memories for her family through countless camping trips and New Year’s Eve parties.
A dedicated member of Bethel Lutheran Church, Hazel generously gave her time through volunteer work and cherished the fellowship of her church community. Above all, she treasured her family and the moments they shared. Her warm heart, creative spirit, and unwavering devotion will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
In addition to her parents and husband, Hazel was preceded in death by her siblings: Dorothy Harner, Cliff Schaeffer, and Ronnie Schaeffer.
She is survived by her children: Preston Shutt, Jr., Judy D’Antuono and her husband Tony, and Janet Wilson and her husband Tim; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and siblings: Joan Knorr, Stanley Schaeffer, Kenny Schaeffer, and Peggy Jeffries.
A celebration of Hazel’s life will be held on Friday, July 11 at 12:00 at Bethel Lutheran Church, 24 Cameron Road, North East, Maryland. Family and friends may begin gathering at 10:00 am. She will be laid to rest at Silverbrook Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Bethel Lutheran Church.
