Lawrence “Larry” “Jay” James Dreyfus of Newark, DE, age 89, passed away Wednesday, September 22, 2021. He was born in Nanticoke, PA on August 4, 1932, to the late Frank Walter Dreyfus and Julia (Kovaleski) Dreyfus.
Larry worked as a photographer for WJZ-TV as a teenager, taking photos of celebrities. He enlisted in the United States Airforce where he was trained to maintain radar equipment. He earned the rank of Staff Sargent and received the Korean Service Medal. After serving in Korea, he remained in the Air Force as an electronics instructor in Denver, CO and Biloxi, MS. Larry went on to work for State of Maryland Highway Administration maintaining communications for police, fire, and highway crews. He also served as a volunteer fireman in Cecilton, MD.
He was married on Thanksgiving Day in 1956 to the love of his life whom he met on a blind date. A wonderful husband, father and grandfather, Larry found his greatest joy in spending time with his family. Always happy with a joy for life, he loved to make people laugh with his wonderful sense of humor. Larry believed the Bible was the word of God and the truths he found in the Bible guided his life and helped him lead his family. He enjoyed listening to music and had a life-long love of photography.
Larry was predeceased by his wife Janet Fay (Alfano) of 60 years and is survived by six children: Christopher Dreyfus (Robyn), Michael Dreyfus, Rita Murray (David), Paul Dreyfus (Cathy), Laura Mrugalski (Joe),and Cheryl Strum (Eric); seven grandchildren: Shawna Crotty (Keth), Jonathan Murray (Rachel), Meghan Schwed (Jordan), Michael Mrugalski, David Mrugalski, Sam Strum and Sarah Strum; and three great-grandchildren: Ashlan, Brooklyn and Everly.
A committal service for Larry will be held at 11am on Friday, October 8, 2021 at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Rd., Bear, DE 19701. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made payable to H.O.M.E. (Honoring Our Military Everywhere) and sent in care of R.T. Foard & Jones Funeral Home, 122 W. Main St., Newark, DE 19711.
