Mark Richard Grunert age 71 of Newark, DE passed away on August 3, 2022. He was born in Madison, Wisconsin on February 19, 1951, to the late Rudolph Richard Grunert and Joan Catherine Grunert (Kessenich).
Mark knew how important it was to be present for his family; he lived to build a good life for them. He was a devoted husband, father, and Poppop. He was there for his daughters in all their sports endeavors, academic achievements, and all their accomplishments in life. He would be there for any hardship to bring hope and be right beside them for their most joyous times, a true father and leader. He gave his time and efforts to Special Olympics of Delaware and Meals on Wheels, showing up for other people when they needed someone the most, a real testament to who he was.
He made a career in banking to support his family but lived his passion outside of work. He loved the heart of competition in sports. In his younger years he played for the University of Delaware golf team and was a three time Club Champion at Newark Country Club. He had the opportunity to caddy for a professional golfer and attend the Masters tournament, two experiences that kept stories and tall tales flowing with his family and friends, not sparing any details. His football pool was a chance for him and his best friend of over 35 years, Jim, who has preceded him in passing, to bring their detail oriented and competitive nature to life. Long live the “Hawk” team through their families who were inspired by their jubilation to participate as well.
Mark made memories for his friends and family that will carry forward beyond his years- the Annual Grunert Wiffleball Cookout with a pristine playing field, annual trips to the Outer Banks, and every tradition that surrounds Christmas. The biggest, widest tree to gather his family, hanging lights for his neighbors to enjoy, but most importantly, the happiness he experienced with his family that surrounded that holiday.
Mark’s time here on earth ended far too abruptly, but with the final days knowingly numbered, his family honored him the best they knew how, the way he showed his love to them, by being present so he could feel their warmth and compassion. He will be greatly missed.
Mark is survived by his wife of 37 years, Teresa L. Grunert; daughters: Megan Grunert and Katie Snyder (Tim); grandchildren: Danielle Snyder and Nicholas Snyder; and sister, Ann Grunert (Tom Bernadzikowski).
In addition to his parents, Mark is preceded in death by his sister, Jean Grunert.
