Marie Catherine “Dee” Swan, age 74, of Newark died at home on June 27, 2021 surrounded by her family.
The daughter of the late William and Ann McGough (Wilde). Dee was born January 30, 1947 in Wilmington. She enjoyed growing up with her five sisters in Wilmington’s Forty Acres. Neighborhood dances were the highlight of her teenage years.
After serving 15 years as a quality control receiving technician at AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals, Dee felt very fortunate to retire early. This allowed her to spend time with her grandchildren, who knew her as “Mom Mom”, and Diaz’s Summer Camp.
Everyone who knew Dee considered her their best friend. She was a great listener, never judged and was the sounding board for her family and friends. Simple things made Dee happy – watching birds play in the birdbath and going to a park (Brandywine was her favorite). Most of all, spending time with her daughters, grandkids, and great-grandchildren is what she lived for.
One of her favorite pastimes was playing cards with family. She also looked forward to weekly outings at movies, or lunch with her sisters and friends.
Dee was the best mother, grandmother, sister, daughter, aunt, and friend that you would ever know. Her light, love, and joy will be forever missed by many.
Dee was predeceased by her mother and father, and sisters Patricia Medkeff and JoAnn Woolard. She is survived by daughters Kim Sibert and Pam Halverson (Howard); grandchildren Steven, Howie, Kelly (Mike), Sean, and Alyssa; great-granddaughters Faith and Brooke; and sisters Janice Carson, Rosemary Burkins, and Christine Czerwinski. Dee also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law, and so many dear friends.
Visitation will be held at St. Matthews Church, 901 E. Newport Pike, Wilmington on Monday, July 5 from 9:00-11:00 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial.
